Job Details

Type of employment:Independent Contractor

Location:Remote position. Strong preference will be given to candidates who are able to travel to communities and events in the US. Candidates must live in a time zone compatible with attending meetings during business hours in North American time zones.

Qualifications

This is a thorough description of our ideal, however we recognize this may be a lot to ask. What is most important is a collaborative attitude, good organizational skills, enthusiasm to learn, and likes a challenge. We are very open to a significant amount of “on the job training” for the right person.

We are also looking for someone to compliment our existing Codirector. Our existing Codirector has a more internal, operational focus. We are looking for someone who will have a more externally engaged focus.

Our new Codirector should:

  • Be outgoing and gregarious, and provide a reasonably and appropriately charismatic, well-known face/persona for people to relate to and connect with through a variety of venues and platforms (e.g., interviews, speaking engagements, workshops, etc., both online and in-person)
  • Actively engage with individuals, communities, and other organizations in the IC movement in helping to craft shared identity and narrative
  • Understand the history & current role of the FIC in the IC movement and in relation to other movements, and its various relationships with individuals and organizations, past and present
  • Have familiarity & experience with a broad range of ICs, other IC focused organizations, the movement as a whole and with aligned movements & organizations, and an ability to speak to this
  • Engage, relate to, network, build & form new relationships with a wide variety of people in different roles outside of the organization, especially with marginalized groups and organizations

Desired Qualities

What we are seeking in a Codirector:

  • Engage in big picture strategic thinking and have a long-term forward-thinking frame of mind, while also being detail oriented. The ability to “see around the curve,” to evaluate the long-term implications for what might seem like small or short-term decisions, and see how they fit into the big picture
  • Well organized, self-motivated, and highly communicative
  • Communication and relational skills needed to help foster good team dynamics (particularly a remote team), delegate, and build consensus
  • Comfortable operating under fluid and variable circumstances
  • Comfortable and familiar in a central leadership role, who approaches leadership with a fundamentally collaborative attitude while also having the ability to make executive decisions when needed and appropriate
  • A commitment to the work of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion

Functions

Codirectors hold the needs of the whole organization as opposed to focusing on a particular area. Codirectors are not expected to be skilled in all areas, but need to have enough familiarity with all aspects of the organization to be able to provide guidance and support, and be able to step in & fill gaps as needed. They need to know enough to engage with others who have more specialized skills and have a sense of what questions to ask in order to ensure everything makes sense. This includes:

  • Online communications platforms for internal & external purposes
  • Managing communication & accountability among staff using virtual platforms such as Zoom, Monday, Slack, Google Docs
  • Research & Analytics
  • Basic oversight of all programs & activities and the staff who manage & administer them, directing priorities, assigning tasks or projects, and managing allotments of paid hours
  • Organizational development
  • Workplace culture, staff well-being, and conflict resolution (in conjunction with the Board’s Ministry Committee)
  • Website development & management
  • Development (fundraising through a variety of means)
  • Customer service
  • Communications, Marketing, and Sales
  • Project planning & management
  • Business management
  • Strategic planning, and implementing/operationalizing strategic plans
  • Hiring, performance reviews, and firing of other staff
  • Budgeting & financial management, including tracking tools, analysis, and reports
