Job Description

The Slocum Foundation is actively recruiting for a new Executive Director to continue to grow our research program across every orthopedic sub-specialty. This is a unique opportunity for an investigator with interest in musculoskeletal care and surgical outcomes, to lead an established team of talented research associates, undergraduate, and graduate-level interns, in a well-supported, multi-disciplinary environment.


Our diverse portfolio of work spans from retrospective case series studies to multi-center clinical trials. We have active protocols and established collaborations with faculty at: University of Oregon, University of Iowa, NYU Langone, Vanderbilt University, Washington University, and the Major Extremity Trauma & Research Consortium (METRC) at Johns Hopkins University. Our team has experience operationalizing protocols from pilot studies to NIH funded R01 clinical trials. We also partner with established industry device manufacturers and innovative start-ups to study implants, wearables, digital therapeutics, and emerging technologies. It’s a great time to join our team, as we have a number of newly funded studies and promising grant applications our project pipeline.


The Executive Director will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight of organizational, research, continuing medical education, and community activities performed by the Slocum Foundation. This position leads the development of protocols, generates grants, manuscripts, and conference abstracts. The ED also cultivates relationships with funders, academic collaborators, and industry sponsors to develop and secure new supported projects.


Candidates with backgrounds in kinesiology, biomechanics, public health, health policy, prevention science, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Solid training in experimental design, research methods, and statistics, biostatistics, or epidemiology is essential. Candidates with strong scientific writing skills and a deep understanding of healthcare data, including administrative billing and electronic health records, will be competitive. This position requires onsite presence daily, and offers flexible hours, competitive wage, and benefits.


About the Slocum Foundation

Located in Eugene, Oregon, the Slocum Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve musculoskeletal care across the lifespan through community-based research, education, and collaboration. The Foundation’s work focuses on promising opportunities for improving patient care and community health by achieving the following aims: (1) preventing disability, (2) enhancing athletic performance, (3) restoring function and quality of life, and (4) informing new approaches to patient care, treatment, and rehabilitation. The Slocum Foundation occupies an administrative suite at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, allowing for seamless access to clinical collaborators and a robust technology infrastructure to support research operations.

  • Willingness to engage in the community as a representative and spokesperson for Slocum Foundation and the Slocum Center.
  • Familiarity with research administration, including pre- and post-award (e.g., sub awards, financial compliance, facilities management, indirect funds distribution, project reporting, no-cost extensions, project close-outs).
  • Formal or demonstrated knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions, orthopedic procedures, and/or biomechanics.
  • Ability to analyze complex clinical trial and healthcare data using R or Stata
  • Demonstrated competency in scientific writing through evidence of peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts, or grants.
  • Two years of management experience and staff oversight; organization of staff meetings, trainings, performance reviews.
  • Formal training or demonstrated knowledge of healthcare data types and structure; electronic medical record and related healthcare applications.
  • Knowledge of organizational and project-based budgeting, fiduciary accountability (including management of restricted versus unrestricted funds), transparency, and acumen necessary to facilitate the allocation of resources.
  • Preferred qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Research Compliance (IRB, GCP, Financial Conflict of Interest Management) and the ethical conduct of research and the protection of human subjects.
  • Demonstrated success using collaboration and consensus building from diverse groups in making strategic decisions.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
  • Peer-reviewed publications in musculoskeletal, orthopedic, biomechanics, or related discipline.
  • Track record of innovation and entrepreneurial capability.
  • Demonstrated training and competency in statistics/biostatistics/epidemiology
  • Formal training and experience in research methodology and protocol development; aims development, study design/approach, evaluation/outcome measurement, result interpretation, reporting.
    • Two years of management experience and staff oversight; organization of staff meetings, trainings, performance reviews.
    • Formal or demonstrated knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions, orthopedic procedures, and/or biomechanics.
    • Ability to analyze complex clinical trial and healthcare data using R or Stata
    • Peer-reviewed publications in musculoskeletal, orthopedic, biomechanics, or related discipline.
    • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
  • PhD or PhD candidate in kinesiology, biomechanics, public health, health policy, prevention science, or related disciplines.
