Experience and Education
High school graduation or GED, valid state driver license, and possession/maintenance of acceptable UT System driver rating.
Pass/maintain acceptable security record since this position is security sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
Four (4) years of experience in inventory control, evidence handling, or in the police department required.
Must obtain Basic Evidence Technician Certification within the first 18 months of employment.
Job Duties
Maintains care, custody, and control of property and evidence taken in by officers/civilians.
Maintains detailed documentation of all activity on each item that is taken in as evidence for court proceedings.
Receives property/evidence from officers and ensure property is packaged and submitted properly.
Attach barcodes.
Maintains complete database of all evidence for tracking purposes.
Transports and retrieves property/evidence to/from various locations.
Obtains completed court dispositions of each case containing property/evidence.
After final dispositions have been determined, researches each case and prepares court orders to present to proper courts.
Conducts audit of items in the property/evidence room.
Conducts regular inspections of the property/evidence room to ensure that all laws and departmental polices are being followed.
Maintains separation of guns, money, drugs, and valuables so each can be readily audited at any time.
Prepares property/evidence for proper disposal.
Prepares court orders for the destruction of narcotics and weapons according to departmental policy and EPA guidelines.
Works with detectives on a daily basis to locate rightful owners of property/evidence that was found, abandoned, or kept for safekeeping.
Works with detectives to determine property needed for court proceedings and which property can be released back to the owner, destroyed, sent to inventory control, etc.
Releases property to appropriate individuals or agencies.
Provides courtroom testimony.
Keeps current with changing laws in regards to evidence to protect the integrity of the department.
Develops forms and guidelines to be used by officers in preservation of evidence according to legal changes.
Performs other related duties as required.
