Job Description
Provides technical guidance on a wide range of environmental matters impacted by company operations and assets; provides advice in the environmental areas of air, water, waste, soil and groundwater. Performs site assessments, tests to ensure that safeguards are in place and aligned with company risk guidelines and regulatory requirements. Verifies that environmental issues are addressed and mitigation measures are implemented. Manages environmental monitoring and reporting. Employees in this Job Category can support multiple environmental areas (air/water, waste/water, etc.).

Supports medium sized clients/customers and makes significant contributions to more complex projects under periodic supervision. General knowledge of the work function and Chevron’s practices.

Chevron Renewable Energy Group based in Ames, IA is accepting applications for the position of Environmental Engineer. This role supports the environmental compliance and regulatory initiatives at Renewable Energy Group as part of the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) department. The Environmental Engineer will assist HSE, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain Management with life cycle analysis (LCA) modelling to support compliance and development of carbon intensity reduction projects. The position will help maintain data collection and integrity that support LCA, manage datasets, create new calculators and tools, and assist with financial analysis and other projects as requested. There may also be opportunities manage carbon intensity reduction projects.
Critical thinking, flexibility, and a willingness to learn are key skills for this role as the programs and models used to complete lifecycle analysis and compliance activities change frequently. Experience with any low carbon fuel programs is preferred, especially around the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Oregon Clean Fuel Program, Federal Renewable Fuel Standard, Canadian provincial programs, and/or the Renewable Energy Directive in Europe.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
  • California Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Oregon Clean Fuel Program, Washington Clean Fuel Standard, Federal Renewable Fuel Standard, Canadian provincial programs, and/or the Renewable Energy Directive in Europe as well as emerging programs in Canada and other jurisdictions.
  • Prepare applications for a variety of low carbon fuel reduction programs including the following programs
    • California Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Oregon Clean Fuel Program, Washington Clean Fuel Standard, Federal Renewable Fuel Standard, Canadian provincial programs, and/or the Renewable Energy Directive in Europe as well as emerging programs in Canada and other jurisdictions.
  • Supporting project management work to evaluate potential opportunities for REG
  • Gather resources for research and execution of compliance and LCA projects.
  • Involvement with developing projects that reduce carbon intensity.
  • Support state level compliance efforts and reporting
  • Assist with development of new areas of development and technologies.
  • Perform regulatory research and analysis to stay updated on new regulations in existing and emerging low carbon fuel incentive programs.
  • Complete LCAs for internal and external projects and collaborate with stakeholders across the organization.
Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word)
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • 1 – 4 years of related experience
  • Strong math and accounting skills
  • 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience – Chemical Engineering, Bio Systems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Public Policy, Sustainability, Environmental studies/science, or related degree
  • Strategic, critical thinking
  • Cross-functional approach and collaboration with strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with Process Information system (PI), Visual Basic, and/or Tableau
  • Project management experience implementing renewable technologies (wind, solar, etc.)
  • Knowledge of lifecycle analysis models
  • Tech savvy, with strong analytical and statistical skills
  • GREET model, GHGenius model, BioGrace model, other
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Familiarity with the environmental field and concepts around greenhouse gases
