This is a remote position but the candidate will need to live in the market area and be able to travel by car to an office or to visit customers when needed.
I. Job Summary
WM is looking for an education and outreach coordinator to join our award-winning team of waste reduction/recycling educators. Protecting the environment is a core value at WM. Our public education and outreach team activates this value every day, bringing both passion and expertise to empower the community to reduce waste and recycle right. You will be joining a collaborative team supportive of learning, growth, and career development.
This position is directly responsible for meeting recycling goals outlined in assigned municipal contracts or as assigned by the manager. The education and outreach coordinator will develop a thorough understanding of WM service offerings and be able to utilize WM relationships and resources to achieve municipality recycling and sustainability goals.
Each day on the job brings new, dynamic opportunities. You will help businesses with sustainability goals, work with apartment managers to educate residents on proper recycling, table at community events, and give recycling 101 presentations to community organizations.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
- Works as a team with Public Sector Sales to assist in creating overall strategy for the municipality and contract.
- Identifies, develops, and conducts waste reduction education programs for businesses, multifamily complexes, and residents, through in-person, phone, virtual and email communication.
- Cultivates community partnerships by attending and participating in public events, meetings and other programs on behalf of the recycling organization.
- Understands which behaviors have the most impact on diversion rates/recycling outcomes and is able to make innovative yet credible and implementable recommendations to a wide variety of municipal stakeholders. Takes the lead in developing solutions; is a thought leader.
- Provides customer facility tours on an as needed basis.
- Thoroughly understands the WM contract; develops, implements, and reports on outreach programs to achieve and surpass contractual metrics.
- Designs and delivers educational programs and presentations focused on achieving sustainability goals and driving awareness of WM efforts in the community. Is able to understand customer base and customize programs/presentations to customer needs.
- Prepares and presents various outreach reports for internal and external use, such as recycling program analysis.
- Conducts site visits and waste audits to determine trash, compost, and recycling service level needs and make recommendations for program improvement.
III. Supervisory Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with others on the team to train and manage the summer WM Recycle Corps interns.
IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience
- Experience: No previous work experience required (in addition to education requirement).
- Education: Associate's Degree (accredited) in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Education, Public Administration or a related field, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and 2 years of relevant work experience.
B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
- Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation
C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
- Strong knowledge of WM products and operations, or an eagerness to learn.
- Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse, multicultural populations.
- Ability to think creatively, problem solve, and work independently while staying organized.
- Demonstrated expertise and skills in environmental, sustainability and/or education fields.
- Able to use influencing skills with community stakeholders, customers and internally within WM.
- Expert small and large group presentation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Adept at understanding the meaning of contract language.
- Aware and adaptable in communication styles.
- Organized and able to implement strategies and plans effectively.
D. Preferred Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Somali, Amharic, Korean, or Tagalong.
- Passion for sustainability, especially waste reduction, recycling, and materials management.
- 1 to 3 years of experience working in outreach, education, or resource conservation.
- Knowledge of the recycling industry.
V. Work Environment

This role is designated as remote within the Seattle area. All office-based work will be done from the employee’s home office or the employee’s remote work location, with regular indoor and outdoor fieldwork around the Seattle area.
Occasional weekend and evening event work is required.
The expected salary range for this position is $64,170 - $80,155. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a bonus.
Exempt positions: Employees will also receive discretionary time off, up to 80 hours of paid sick time per year and 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Additionally, the company has a leave pay policy that provides for up to 4 weeks of paid leave in a rolling 12-month period for qualifying.
