Job Description
Be a Star at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts! The Director of Safety and Security is responsible for the safety and security of the Straz Center and the Patel Conservatory; its patrons, students, employees and volunteers. The position is also responsible for parking management, workplace safety and security. The Director of Safety and Security also serves as the Chairperson of the Safety Committee. Located in downtown Tampa, the Straz offers flexible hours, event-based schedules including evenings and weekends, and a team-based work environment. Essential Functions: Security: Creates or implements security standards, policies, and procedures and implements organizational wide processes to support these initiatives. Identifies, investigates, and resolves security breaches and coordinates loss prevention responses. Plans, directs, or coordinates security activities to include collaboration with public law enforcement, fire, and other agencies. Trains security professionals and other organization members in security rules and procedures. Plans security for special and high-risk events. Oversees/manages off duty law enforcement that work for the Straz Center. Analyzes and evaluates security operations. Monitors security policies, programs, or procedures and daily radio communications and transmissions. Oversees/manages the organization's radios, radio equipment inventory, channel assignments, the organization's CCTV system and equipment. Oversees/manages the organization's electronic access system. Communicates security status, updates and actual or potential problems using established protocols. Develops, conducts, supports, or assists in reviews, evaluations, or assessments of security processes. Coordinates and moves vehicles as needed. Administrative: Manages the use of access control and CCTV systems and ensures that staff members are professionally trained on the systems. Develops and manages the budget for security operations. Reviews financial reports. Recommends purchase of security-related supplies, equipment, or technology. Prepares reports to make presentations on internal investigations, losses, or violations of regulations, policies, and procedures. Collects and analyzes security data to determine security needs, security program goals, or program accomplishments. Develops or manages investigation programs. Conducts threat or vulnerability analyses. Develops, recommends, and manages security procedures. Coordinates, seeks, and manages grant funding exploration. Oversees all aspects of operations during show conditions as the MOD. Workplace Safety: Prepares and enforces policies to establish a culture of health and safety: Develops, implements, manages, and evaluates policies and methods to protect personnel against harassment, threats, or violence. Directs or participates in emergency management and contingency planning. Coordinates Safety Committee meetings and s erves on the Risk Management Team. Responds to medical emergencies, bomb threats, fire alarms, or intrusion alarms. Maintains expertise on the use and practice of AED (defibrillator) and ensures that all Security staff are trained in its use. Develops and executes health and safety plans in accordance with legal guidelines. Manages the replacement and maintenance of all first aid stations. Implements organizational annual training workplace safety training programs. Evaluates practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law. Investigates accidents or incidents and oversees submission of worker's compensation claims. Manages the electronic submission of reports and potential insurance claims. Recommends solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures. Reports on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics. Meets and collaborates with Workers Compensation Insurance providers to examine the overall organizational strategies. Parking and Valet Services: Oversees/manages Parking and Valet services, including directing and monitoring daily activities. Develops a comprehensive vision and mission that supports the organizational goals and policy development for parking and valet services sustainability. Represents the Straz Center Parking and Valet Services on state, local and county committees and task forces. . Oversees/manages fiscal and personnel management of departmental resources. Maintains efficient and effective operations in administration of parking, parking permit, and special authorizations. Implements, designs, disseminates and submits parking and special event operational plans. Provides leadership in the development of creative ideas, continuous process improvement, and application of new technology. Maintenance of Traffic ("MOT") : Supervises and coordinates activities of traffic control and establishes traffic control patterns. Monitors activities to ensure compliance with law enforcement assistance. Establishes, communicates and directs the implementation of, including changes in, traffic maintenance policies, standards and regulations. Plans, organizes and supervises all equipment and materials needed to manage traffic-related situations. Facilitates and integrates traffic maintenance activities. Provides timely responses to technical questions of field operations. Works with local municipal agencies and law enforcement. Certified by the State of Florida in Maintenance of Traffic. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position manages the Security staff. Secondary Functions and Responsibilities: Contributes to overall team effort in planning and development and shares in the decision making process, implementing and promoting all decisions in a spirit of cooperation. Assists in departmental functions and special events and performs other duties when necessary to ensure the overall smooth operation of the department. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities): Ability to interact in a sensitive, courteous, and understanding way with members of a diverse community; including students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Ability to make sound decisions based on good judgment on a frequent basis. Ability to supervise others. Must be able to understand general management concepts and know how to use computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email. Must have a general understanding of post order/operating procedure documentation and file maintenance. Must be able to understand and operate access control and CCTV surveillance software. Must possess an understanding of fire panels/security systems. Ability to document and communicate activity, both verbally and in writing. This position requires frequent evening, weekend and holiday availability. Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Security, law enforcement, event management or related field. Minimum of five years' experience in security management, preferably in public assembly venues. 10 years Law Enforcement, Military, or Security Management Experience. 10 years management experience including recruitment, selection, training, correcting, and evaluating employees. Certifications / Licenses: Must have a valid Florida Driver's license. CPR/Basic First Aid Certification required. CPR/AED, Basic First Aid Certification preferred. State Issued Class "D" Private Security Officer License. State Issued Class "M" Security Agency Manager's License. State of Florida MOT Certification (Traffic Management) Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job.
