Job Description
Job Summary:


Primal Pet Group is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Procurement to oversee all aspects of sourcing and supply chain management. The Director of Procurement will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of Primal’s sourcing processes, maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, and driving cost-effective sourcing strategies. This position requires exceptional leadership abilities, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of sourcing principles and best practices.


Duties/Responsibilities:


Our facilities are located in four states (CA, WA, CO, and TX). This is an on-site position with occasional domestic travel of up to 40%. Duties and Responsibilities include:


  • Market Research: Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and emerging technologies to drive innovation and efficiency in the procurement process.
  • Data Analysis: Utilize data analytics tools and techniques to monitor procurement performance, identify areas for improvement, and drive data-driven decision-making.
  • Contract Negotiation: Lead negotiations with suppliers to obtain favorable terms and conditions, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Help develop standard contract templates.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, negotiate contracts, and monitor supplier performance to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and on-time delivery.
  • Sourcing Strategy: Develop and implement the company's Sourcing and procurement strategy, in alignment with overall business objectives and industry best practices.
  • Cost Management: Implement strategies to optimize costs, including exploring alternative sourcing options, negotiating volume discounts, and managing inventory levels.
  • Supply Chain Optimization: Continuously evaluate and improve supply chain processes and procedures to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize risks.
  • Teamwork: Able to work collaboratively with direct procurement team, manufacturing, and executive leadership to provide guidance and execute sourcing strategies
  • Supplier Selection and Evaluation: Identify potential suppliers, evaluate their capabilities, conduct due diligence, and make informed decisions regarding supplier selection.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential risks in the supply chain, such as supply disruptions, quality issues, or regulatory compliance.


Required Skills/Abilities:


  • Supplier Management: Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, negotiating contracts, and managing supplier performance.
  • Procurement Expertise: In-depth knowledge of procurement principles, best practices, and emerging trends, with a proven track record of driving cost savings and process improvements.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficient in data analysis and interpretation, with the ability to leverage data to drive decision-making and identify areas for improvement.
  • Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of the pet food manufacturing business, including knowledge of relevant regulations, safety, and compliance requirements.
  • Strategic Thinking: Proven ability to think strategically, develop and execute procurement strategies aligned with business objectives, and adapt to changing market conditions.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify root causes, develop innovative solutions, and drive implementation.
  • Communication and Negotiation: Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and build partnerships at all levels of the organization.


Education and Experience:


  • Experience in the pet food manufacturing business preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, supply chain management, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in sourcing, procurement, supply chain management, or a related field, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.


Physical Requirements:


This candidate will work in both office and manufacturing environments. Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time. Able to lift and move up to 50 pounds occasionally.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:


Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. The work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot and/or cold temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.


The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:


Hard hats, safety glasses with side shields, safety footwear, and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor. The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when job task(s) require them which includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety head and footwear.
