Position Overview:
The Director of Photography (DP) or cinematographer, is a key role in the production of our educational video content. The DP is responsible for the artistic and technical aspects of capturing the desired look and feel of each project through the use of camera, lighting, and other visual elements. They will work closely with the director, producers, and production team, to ensure the visual storytelling aligns with the overall creative vision of the project. The production will have 1 presenter per course presentation, presenting to main camera with one additional off angle camera.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cinematography Planning and Execution:
● Collaborate with the director to understand and interpret the visual style and requirements of the project.
● Develop a cinematography plan, including shot composition, camera movement, and lighting design, to achieve the desired aesthetic.
● Frame shots to fit graphics and other visual elements being added in post-production.
● Coordinate with the camera and lighting crew to implement the cinematography plan effectively.
● Utilize the studios or provide your own 2 camera setup, lenses, filters, and other equipment to achieve the desired visual effects.
● Utilize the studios lighting equipment
2. Camera and Lighting Setup:
● Oversee the additional camera operator and ensure proper setup, maintenance, and operation of cameras, lenses, and related equipment.
● Design and execute lighting setups that enhance the mood and atmosphere of each set.
● Determine the camera angles, framing, and camera movement (if needed) for each shot
● Utilize the studio grid lighting and use ladders to move and adjust lighting equipment
● Utilize the ETC lighting control board in the studio
● If filming on location, design lighting using professional lighting equipment combined with natural light and practical lights already built into the spaces.
● Transport and setup all camera and lighting equipment in necessary locations with the support of the production crew
3. Technical Expertise:
● Possess in-depth knowledge of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and other cinematography tools.
● Match settings, look and feel of the A and B cameras.
● Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in cinematography techniques, equipment, and technology.
● Troubleshoot technical issues related to cameras, lighting, and other equipment during production.
4. Audio monitoring:
● Camera department will be responsible for setting up talent with microphones plugged into main camera and monitoring audio during all filming.
● DP can delegate this responsibility to Camera Operator, but will ensure professional capture of audio
5. Collaboration and Leadership:
● Work closely with the director and other key creative personnel to ensure visual consistency and coherence throughout the project.
● Supervise the camera team, providing guidance, instructions, and feedback to achieve the desired visual goals.
● Collaborate with the post-production team to ensure the successful transfer and integration of visual elements in the editing and color grading processes.
● Create a solid workflow with post-production supervisor to ensure media is backed up and then returned to camera team
● Ensure that all media is backed up before reformatting cards
6. Aesthetic Decisions:
● Make artistic choices regarding composition, framing, camera movement, and lighting to enhance the storytelling and evoke the desired emotions.
● Utilize color schemes, contrast, and other visual elements to establish the mood and atmosphere of each scene.
● Maintain visual continuity and style consistency across different different builds of our modular set.
7. Adobe Frame.io Camera to Cloud:
● Previous experience with Adobe Frame.io Camera to Cloud workflow isn’t required, but is preferred.
● We are currently planning to utilize this workflow to pass media to editors immediately as content is recorded.
8. Set and Lighting
● Anticipate and lead all lighting requirements, working collaboratively and creatively with the production team, and bringing life to each scene.
● Prepping for shoots both at the studio and on location by retrieving all necessary lighting and electrical equipment.
● Work with the production team to build and set up the physical set.
● Oversee scene lighting upon arrival to each scheduled shoot; adjusting as needed in collaboration with the Producer.
● Oversee operating and setting up all electrical equipment such as stinger’s, power bricks, and adapters.
● Oversee tearing down sets once production is complete (E.g. coiling cables, folding c-stands, putting away lights).
● Oversee all lighting and electrical equipment ensuring safety is a priority
Skills and Qualifications:
● Extensive experience as a Director of Photography or cinematographer in online content or related visual media.
● Strong artistic and technical skills in cinematography, camera operation, lighting design, and composition.
● Proficiency in working with a variety of cameras, lenses, and other cinematography equipment.
○ Specifically with canon cinema cameras including the C300 MK II.
● Proficiency with boom and lav mic monitoring, setup and placement with talent.
● Experience working in studio spaces and on-location to achieve the desired look and feel of the content.
● Knowledge of lighting techniques and the ability to create visually compelling and appropriate lighting setups.
● Excellent understanding of visual storytelling, shot composition, and camera movement.
● Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively collaborate with the director, crew, and other departments.
● Attention to detail and the ability to maintain visual consistency throughout the project.
● Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances, production constraints, and creative requirements.
● Problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and troubleshoot equipment issues.
● Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, advancements in cinematography techniques, and emerging technologies.
● Need to be able to lift heavy equipment (more than 25Ibs) and work from a ladder.
