About the Job:


The Director of Analytics and Data Science is tasked with championing data throughout Laurel Road, ensuring we have data at the heart of everything we do. A true player coach, this leader will manage a team of 5 to 10 and arm business partners with financial and non-financial data reporting, analytics, recommendations, and subject matter expertise. This leader will use relationship building and influence to work with key business leaders, stakeholders and team members to deliver insights that may affect diverse business areas, from member behavior to credit risk management, to pricing and other business strategies. This position will require someone with a strong passion for data & analytics, pricing and credit risk management, growing our culture, leading our teammates, and delivering high-quality data solutions that facilitate the on-going growth of Laurel Road’s business activity.


This leader will support and/or oversee four primary areas – Advanced Analytics for Credit and Pricing, Forecasting & Planning, Enterprise Reporting and Data Science.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • Leadership: You are responsible to create, build, maintain, and implement the team’s strategy, vision, roadmap initiatives and projects. Working with top talent in a fast-paced environment, setting data quality, governance, and visualization in a simplistic manner are top priorities. Work with the business to sponsor and champion analytics that drive increased positive sentiment and revenue. Develop and maintain policies and procedures necessary for the correct functioning of the area. Use reason and care to obtain the resources to fulfill the responsibilities as efficiently as possible. Organize work in a way that maximizes productivity and minimizes errors.
  • Decision-making support: Provide fact-based opinions to support strategic decisions. Provide insights to grow and develop our brand, products and financials. Leverage research and analytics to improve existing and identify new opportunities while maintaining a focus on our strategy and customer experience.
  • Supervision: Oversee a team of managers, specialists, data analysts and data scientists. Interview, hire and train as needed. Plan, assign and direct workloads. Evaluate performance and reward. Promote competencies development. Assure resilience via employee engagement, talent management, succession, and business continuity planning.


As stated above, The Director of Analytics and Data Science will be a true player coach who will manage a current team of seven, responsible for each of the areas below:


Advanced Analytics for Credit and Pricing:


  • Partner with subject matter experts within risk, finance, treasury, and credit among other functional and business support teams to problem solve complex topics that drive consistency in the evaluation of pricing and balance sheet deployment opportunities within our businesses
  • Conduct analysis as it relates to new loan and deposit origination pricing, and review portfolio data to identify and develop pricing strategies that enhance profitability and proper risk management for both our loan and deposit products.
  • Continually assess and recommend improvements to risk-related processes: underwriting, collections, scoring models and development of credit risk strategy policies and procedures.
  • Develop pricing and risk recommendations that complement our business strategy and support our competitive advantages; align our leadership team and communicate our strategy recommendations to key stakeholders in a digestible way.
  • Own pricing tools and ensure that they reasonably reflect product and relationship profitability and are aligned to overall bank profitability and risk/return metrics.
  • Collaborate with Director of Credit and Pricing Leader to ensure we are making data driven decisions.
  • Utilize data to develop tools for better credit decisions, portfolio management, limit strategies and risk-based pricing across our product set.


Forecasting and Planning:


  • Work together with our Forecasting and Planning Leader to ensure we are using data, data science and data tools to drive our forecasting .
  • Utilize data to develop tools for monthly, annual and long term forecasting and planning.
  • Partner across the enterprise to lead our quarterly and annual forecasting exercises at the channel and product level with our finance partners. Perform periodic updates to the forecasts to assess changes in business priorities, economic factors, and interest rates (forward curves).
  • Support forecast modeling by owning and understanding inputs and outputs associated with each of our marketing channels and products.
  • Create and consolidate reporting efforts including month-end and forecast deliverables.


Enterprise Data, Insights & Reporting:


  • Responsible for analytics and reporting to all areas of Laurel Road to monitor business KPIs, goals, marketing results and product origination performance, while uncovering business opportunities to increase share-of-wallet and bottom-line revenue.
  • Create new data-driven approaches for the purpose of generating business insights through data analytics, information visualization, and addressing unanswered business issues.
  • Demonstrate and maintain in-depth knowledge of the business success drivers, industry trends, data analytics, regulatory issues, and the competitive marketplace.
  • Optimize the collection, manipulation, and analysis of data for various business functions/departments such as marketing, finance, product, originations and operations, among others.


Model Management:


  • Lead the development of predictive models as well as the use of machine and deep learning algorithm and techniques.
  • Lead and direct the testing and validation of predictive models and data.
  • Manage and develop our predictive advance models process used for business problems.
  • SME working with data scientists and model risk to ensure proper logic data models are defined and managed correctly, including data capturing, validation and storage processes.


Preferred Education/Experience:


  • 5+ or more years strategic or management consulting experience
  • 10+ in Analytics and/or Business Intelligence
  • Must have the appropriate financial management experience and analytical capability to translate hard data into strategic plans
  • 5+ in Financial Services
  • Experience in finance, banking, fintech
  • Experience in project planning and management, with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • 3+ in Project management
  • 5+ years in Managerial Positions
  • Proven analytical ability (data mining/manipulation, forecasting)
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly analyze situations and risks, determine paths of action, and execute flawlessly
  • Expert experience in creating product briefings and presenting to executive leadership
  • Excellent skills with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with and a strong understanding of consumer banking including lending, deposits, and credit risk


Compensation And Benefits


This position is eligible to earn a base salary in the range of $140,000 to $200,000 annually, depending on job-related factors such as level of experience. Compensation for this role also includes eligibility for short-term incentive compensation and deferred incentive compensation subject to individual and company performance.
