Title: Director, Community Partnerships & Engagement


Position Summary


Reporting up to the Chief Marketing Officer, this position would be focused on strategically addressing the needs of LGBTQ employees working in government; be responsible for designing and overseeing the Out & Equal community groups’ (affinity groups) strategy (), including the infrastructure build out programming for existing community groups, as well as the launching and management of new community groups; and building and maintaining the relationships with key community partners such as DisabilityIn, GenderCool, Ascend, NGLCC, HRC and others. Our Programming for CEGs involves collaboration with subject matter experts from our Community Partner groups, as well as internally across all Out & Equal teams, including those who identify in these groups.

Job Competencies:

  • Relationship Management - Demonstrates an understanding of the unique needs of stakeholders through frequent, timely, and tailored communications. Fosters a positive relationship between stakeholder and organizational brand. Coordinates across relevant verticals to share information, and align on messaging and commitments.
  • Community Engagement - Fosters psychologically safe communities of likeminded and diverse people through consistent and effective engagement. Facilitates meaningful conversation through demographically appropriate content and well-moderated discussion. Curates group membership and engagement types/modalities in alignment with organizational goals. Helps raise opportunities within greater movement to elevate visibility and profile of organization as a thought leader in LGBTQ+ equality.
  • Program Management - Designs and implements programs that support the organization's mission, vision, values, and goals. Coordinates with marketing & communications team to amplify and grow programs. Ensures success of programs through regular needs assessments, program evaluation and continuous improvement commitments, and impact analysis.
  • Program Evaluation - Gathers and leverages data in order to make informed decisions about the program or evaluate its success against established objectives. Reports on successes and failures to key stakeholders.
  • Research & Thought Leadership - Curates, creates, and leverages fact-based information to cement Out & Equal as an expert or authoritative source of information in the LGBTQ+ DEIB space. Applies principles of research integrity to content creation and distribution.


Duties and Responsibilities:


The Director, Community Engagement will strategically convene a number of community groups with internal and external experts to develop program content, increase visibility of the Out & Equal brand, and create a partnership pipeline that grows Out & Equal’s mission impact.


These communities include, but are not limited to the following groups:


  • LGBTQ+ Parents
  • Trans, Nonbinary, and Gender Nonconforming
  • Disability (with Disability:IN)
  • Parents of LGBTQ+ kids (with GenderCool)
  • Government
  • Bi+ (with Robyn Ochs)
  • Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)


Community Management


  • Publish and maintain community groups calendar (in Global Hub)
  • Monitor LGBTQ+ nonprofit landscape and maintain working relationships with peers in other organizations
  • Survey and interview community group members with the aim of collecting qualitative/quantitative data for research and publication purposes.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for collaboration with both new and established partners, stakeholders, and organizations
  • Collaborate with corporate and government Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)
  • Facilitate conversation and activities between community group members through a number of different channels, both online and in person, including through conferences (such as Summit or Southern States initiatives), meetings, workshops, panels, round tables, webinars, social media, and online forums such as the Global Hub.
  • Grow and maintain contact information for key stakeholder groups in Salesforce, and solidify outreach strategies and tactics for these groups


Research and Resource Development


  • Conduct research on emerging trends, themes, discussions in support of an O&E Community strategy for different identities and their respective groups (our Community Partners)
  • Research and develop learning materials in partnership with Learning & Development team.
  • Develop website content related to identity, including toolkits, guides, papers, blogs, and an LGBTQ+ glossary.
  • In partnership with Marketing & Communications team, create engaging and shareable materials for website, events, e-mail campaigns, social media, and other channels.


Partnership Engagement


  • Track community group membership through Salesforce
  • Develop strategic relationships with other nonprofits and research institutions with the aim of expanding Out & Equal’s profile as a thought leader in LGBTQ+ leadership and workplace advocacy issues.
  • Devise new programs/revenue streams leveraging community group work.
  • Pitch and proactively develop programming with corporate and government partners, in collaboration with Corporate Engagement team.
  • Identify opportunities for recruiting new partners, in collaboration with Corporate Engagement team.

  • Experience with LGBTQ issues and communities, and/or LGBTQ identity within or addressed in other social justice and/or workplace equality organizations
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team;
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and management- effectively leverage proven outreach and consulting processes to drive community groups from broad-based inclusive discussion to crystalized emerging trends and themes, to actionable resources that leverage the collective stories and experience of the community.
  • As much desire and focus on the behind-the-scenes growing and managing the foundation of this program (processes, structure, IT, comms, contact management database) as the more visible work in tracking and evolving identity in the workplace, and social elements of the job
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential information

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Organizational Development, Gender Studies or a related field; degree may be substituted for an equivalent amount of experience.


Minimum Years of Relevant Experience: 8 years of relevant experience. Management consulting experience in Stakeholder and/or Community Engagement teams a plus (and/or equivalent work on government transformation/modernization, IT or customer service improvement work within Strategic Communications, Public Participation, and/or Organizational Change Teams).

Location: Remote, with strong preference for DC metro area given the focus on Federal government and location of many of our community partners. Flexibility to work outside the bounds of a 9-5 PM workday when required based on community group availability.

Salary:
  • Typical hiring range for high cost of living locations (DC/CA/NYC): $86,957.00 - $115,943.00
  • Typical hiring range for all other locations: $73,914.00 - $98,551.55


Required Travel: 10-15%, with additional meetings downtown Washington DC and surrounding DC metro region required when needed.
