Role Summary
The Director, Audit Programs sets the long-term strategy and oversees the performance of the audit function of Alaska Airlines (AS) and Horizon Air (QX). Reporting to the Vice President, Audit Programs, with periodic access to Executive Management, the Audit Committee and/or the Safety Committee, this role directs the activities of auditors working on financial, information technology, commercial, strategic, compliance, safety and operational audits. As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of leaders to execute all phases of Audit and SOX projects, as well as support for the ERM program.
Key Duties
- Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.
- Guides teams in delivering high quality audit reports, working closely with company management to collaboratively develop actionable plans to address audit findings and follow-up to ensure actions are appropriately remediated.
- Shapes culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors to drive a high-performance culture.
- Supports external reviews of operating divisions, including partnering with Safety to support the biennial Department of Defense (DOD) and IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) evaluations of Alaska and Horizon.
- Oversees annual Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls validation and testing efforts, including coordination with internal stakeholders and external auditors.
- Establishes strategic goals and direction for teams leading Internal Audit, IEP, and SOX with a 12+ month horizon, focused on innovation and progressive audit approaches.
- Reviews SEC and other financial reports and provides meaningful feedback to the Disclosure Committee to ensure quarterly and annual filings reflect appropriate information known to the Audit Programs group, including updating relevant risk factors.
- Partners with the Vice President, Audit Programs and key stakeholders to facilitate the annual internal audit and IEP risk assessments (including technology risks) to support a risk-based audit plan. Provides input to enterprise risk management risk assessment.
- Ensures all audits are executed in accordance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing and remains focused on continuous improvement to strengthen audit programs processes, and controls.
- Performs special projects related to system implementations, compliance or process concerns, or other areas requested by senior leadership.
- Seeks a solid return for AAG’s investment in Audit Programs activities, either through improved assurance with respect to the quality and effectiveness of internal controls or through recommendations that enhance operational effectiveness or efficiency.
- Presents audit results in quarterly senior leadership and board of directors’ meetings.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
- Minimum age of 18.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- A bachelor’s degree with a focus in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related discipline, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
- 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- 8 years of experience with significant managerial/program oversight in areas such as internal or external audit, internal evaluation programs, or related area.
- Detail oriented and highly organized, with ability to multi-task and work independently with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Internal Auditor with Big 4 or large regional firm experience.
- Excellent communication skills, especially with executive level report writing as well as presenting to senior leadership / board of directors.
- Participatory and team-oriented leadership style with a proven track record coaching, developing and leading cohesive, results-oriented teams.
- Excellent strategic thinking, business risk awareness, and appropriate judgment to use a risk-based approach to understand complex business processes, develop an accurate understanding of risks, and develop audit plans responsive to those risks.
- Safety program management or Safety Management System (SMS) experience.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and build relationships effectively with all levels of the organization, particularly senior leadership.
- Experience in the aviation industry.

Salary Range
$151,700 - $250,300 / year
Total Target Compensation Range (incl. bonus & equity)
$199,010-$327,190
Salary Details
The pay range and total target compensation package listed above is the expected pay offered for this position at the start of employment. Your pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, your relevant experience/level, experience level, and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
