The Director of Ambulatory Nursing Practice incorporates the oversight of clinical processes as it relates to nursing and support staff personnel as well as the development, support, and mentoring of job classifications within the nursing practice family for all sites under the LPCHS ambulatory environment. Provides organizational leadership in developing and setting standards for professional nursing practice, with oversight by the Executive Director/Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) of Ambulatory Services and in collaboration with other nursing managers. This director role will encompass governance related to scope of practice in areas such as Epic documentation, Medical Assistant (MA) roles/tasks as well as ambulatory leadership and partnership with various areas within the clinical quality domain. This role is responsible for implementations and execution for key areas of compliance to ensure regulatory adherence to all applicable Joint Commission requirements as well as other accrediting body standards. This role reports directly to the Executive Director/ACNO of Ambulatory Services, who will direct critical aspects of this role as it relates to nursing practice and quality oversight.


Essential Functions

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.


Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).


  • Develops and oversees administration and development of clinical competencies for the Ambulatory Services Oversight includes initial as well as annual process for competency evaluation.
  • Work collaboratively with Ambulatory Education team on the development of clinical education programs for new hires as well as ongoing training related to newly introduced job responsibilities.
  • Oversees continuous monitoring program for survey readiness for Ambulatory Services. Conducts routine audits to ensure compliance to standards and works collaboratively with the Director of Accreditation & Regulatory Compliance to develop tools and processes that focus on maintenance of the environment to meet these standards. Audit program will include focus on medication safety, environmental standards, and infection control, point of care testing, and all appropriate Joint Commission and Title XXII standards.
  • Provides direction to and collaborates with practice managers, site managers and clinical chiefs to ensure policies and practices promote optimum patient care outcomes as it relates to quality, safety and nursing practice. Ensures clinical practices result in compliance with Joint Commission requirements and all other accrediting bodies' standards.
  • Actively participates in hospital and enterprise-wide nursing forums to ensure practice development within ambulatory locations is consistent with overall hospital and enterprise-wide direction.
  • Actively participates/leads forums that promote the professional development and advancement of nursing, including Shared Governance.
  • Provides leadership in the development of quality and safety improvement processes within Ambulatory Services and collaborates with the Center for Quality and Clinical Effectiveness in this work.
  • Provides oversight of Ambulatory Services Policy Review Committee, including coordination of the review process as well as identification of necessary additional policies/procedures.
  • Coaches nursing management team on HR related issues and collective bargaining. Works with HR/ELR on corrective action. Resource to non-nurse managers on nursing and clinical practice concerns/issues.
  • Serves as the ambulatory leader and consultant in areas including clinical oversight for staff level documentation in Epic, Point of Care Testing, medication safety, and infection control. Collaboratively works with leaders within laboratory, Epic, pharmacy, quality, etc. to provide input based on workflows within Ambulatory Services as well as providing content expertise as policies and procedures are developed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Represents Ambulatory Nursing as appropriate in key hospital committees, forums, and conferences. May backup ACNO on various committees as needed.
  • Provides ongoing education to practice and site managers as well as front line LPCHS staff related to regulatory requirements, new policies and procedures, new practice standards, and documentation driven by Epic system upgrades/changes.
  • Oversight of quality and safe clinical care within Ambulatory Services. Observes and assesses the clinical competency and nursing practice of registered nurses in the practices for input into their performance evaluations.


Minimum Qualifications


Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.


Education: Master's degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university


Experience: Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience including three 3 years of management/supervisory experience


License/Certification: CA registered nurse-valid license as a registered nurse issues by the California Board of Registered Nursing

Specialty Certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) within one year of hire


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.


  • Ability to communicate extremely well through email, in oral presentations and in written materials such as policies.
  • Knowledge of the scope of practice for Nursing and scope of work for MA and other clinical support staff personnel.
  • Ability to work across various levels of leadership, management and staff to effectively influence, educate, and collaborate.
  • Knowledge of applicable health care regulations, state and federal, and key surveys impacting the ambulatory environment.
  • Ability to make decisions independently, consulting experts in the field as needed and working with hospital and School of Medicine leadership.
  • Knowledge of Epic.

Pay Range


Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.


Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.


Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.


Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $151,590.40 to $201,000.80
