About Shatterproof & The National Stigma Initiative

Shatterproof was founded in 2013 to fill the gap for a well-funded, national, coordinated effort to reverse the course of the addiction health crisis, with the singular goal of ending the devastation addiction is causing our families. We know there are science-based solutions that can prevent and treat this disease, and we are committed to what research has proven to be effective. We have identified three priority pillars: transforming addiction treatment, ending addiction stigma, and educating and empowering communities.

Transforming Addiction Treatment: Shatterproof is transforming the U.S. healthcare system for the more than 40 million Americans living with a substance use disorder (SUD). Like anyone suffering from a disease, those with this disease deserve access to treatment that is based on science, complemented by a supportive recovery community, both free of shame and stigma. Removing barriers to lifesaving treatment is a core mission focus of Shatterproof.

Ending Addiction Stigma: Shatterproof’s National Stigma Initiative replicates the success of other transformational social movements—such as HIV/AIDS activism, cancer awareness, and marriage equality—in catalyzing the change needed to create a more tolerant, more compassionate, and healthier future. We are committed to creating solutions that are adept at changing attitudes and behaviors and ultimately closing SUD treatment gaps and health inequities for historically disadvantaged populations who experience compounded discrimination and bias.

Supporting and Empowering Communities: Shatterproof is committed to educating and empowering our families and communities nationwide by providing supportive and evidence-based resources related to prevention, treatment and recovery from addiction.

Shatterproof’s National Stigma Initiative is a multi-sectoral movement designed to address the stigma experienced by people with substance use disorder (SUD). The Initiative works closely with state government, community organizations, individuals, etc. to overcome the addiction stigma that millions of Americans face each and every day. When we reduce stigma, people are more likely to access resources and treatment, take life-saving medications, and talk to someone they trust.

Shatterproof developed a research-driven strategy to reduce stigma in various forms, including public stigma, structural stigma, self-stigma, and stigma around life-saving medications. The National Stigma Initiative replicates the success of other transformational social movements in catalyzing the change needed to create more understanding, more compassionate, and more connected communities. Shatterproof is committed to creating solutions that are adept at changing knowledge, attitudes, and ultimately behaviors associated with substance use disorder stigma.

Shatterproof’s movement engages stakeholders in six segments of our society—employers, healthcare, government, criminal justice, media and entertainment, and local communities—to implement evidence-informed, easy-to-understand educational programs. Our inaugural work focused on engaging local communities through statewide addiction stigma reduction campaigns. We currently partner in four state to implement effective stigma reduction campaigns: Pennsylvania, Kentucky, California, and Georgia.

Each campaign utilizes the Shatterproof Addiction Stigma Index (SASI) to establish a baseline for levels of stigma, a contact-based strategy to increase public empathy and understanding, credible messengers through a robust social media influencer program, and a collective impact model rooted in a community-driven strategy. In addition, we recently expanded our work into the healthcare system to address the stigma that healthcare providers hold around SUD and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).

With plans to continue to scale our community-based programs across the country in 2024 and beyond, the National Stigma Initiative is looking to onboard a second Digital Content Coordinator to support the increased digital outputs needed for campaign reach and impact.

THE ROLE

The Digital Content Coordinator is responsible for producing high-quality video content and graphic assets for social media, and other digital and print distribution channels. This person is a passionate storyteller that can translate community narratives into engaging and educational content. This content serves as a vehicle for delivering effective campaign messaging aimed at reducing addiction stigma among the communities we serve.

This position will report directly to the Senior Director, Digital, National Stigma Initiative, while working in close collaboration with the Digital Content Coordinator, Digital Ad Manager, and campaign state leads in current and forthcoming states. This person will be an individual contributor, with no direct reports. The position will be based remotely, and at this time there is only an expectation for no more than quarterly travel for departmental offsites.
