Well-B is seeking an Innovation Design Associate to help drive the discovery, prototyping, and delivery of human-centered healthcare experiences that exceed our member’s expectations.
At Well-B, the Innovation team of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, we look for people who are curious, eager learners, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to work equally well independently and as part of a fast-paced team. The Innovation Design Associate is a critical role at Well-B which will advance our overall goals to make health care better for all. At Well-B we are passionate about bringing innovation to healthcare and empowering our people to use human-centered approaches to solve big challenges. This position is open to the following personas: mobile and resident.
Responsibilities
This person will join our Innovation team to help design new solutions in health care, and drive them through execution.
Key characteristics:

A craftsman. You dream about elegant design every day. You can’t stop yourself from seeing everything, everywhere, all the time and wishing you had the time to redesign it all. You are proficient using tools like design software tools, and can efficiently use your skillset to develop new designs within existing and new visual systems and design languages.
A systems thinker. As you translate user needs, style guides, and requirements into elegant solutions for complex problems, you’re not just thinking about the task at hand but about how your design choices scale and fit within larger established systems and patterns.
Passionate. You are genuinely interested in designing beautiful experiences that impact people’s lives. You make it your business to know as much as you can about the people you are designing for and make design decisions based on their needs. You are also active within the design community, staying up-to-date on the latest design trends, techniques, and tools. Including the latest developments with design accelerators related to artificial intelligence (AI).
Collaborative with low-ego. You enjoy working on agile teams with other designers, product managers, and engineers. You’re a team player who puts the interest of the team above your own. You will collaborate with product managers, developers and design teams on research activities, strategy sessions, ideation, design, testing of new product concepts, and facilitated workshops with business clients and stakeholders. You display a positive attitude and are excited to share your ideas with the team as well as listen to those of others.
Have a can-do attitude. You’re a proactive team player who is eager and excited about producing awesome work. No task is too small or large for you. You are able to work alone or with partners to problem solve and develop clear action and execution plans for a task, informing your manager of progress appropriately.

You’re able to present research findings and design concepts to designers and product partners.
Detail-oriented. You impress your teammates with the ability to pick out small nuances that no one else seems to notice. You’re proud that your production files are always pixel perfect and you’ve thought through every permutation of your designs, making the development process smooth sailing.

Key Responsibilities:
Assisting with planning and execution of research activities, including 1:1 user interviews, focus groups, and design sessions (ranging in size from ~3-100+ people).
Documenting quotes and insights from user interviews, focus groups, and design sessions, and partnering with teammates to summarize findings
Assisting with planning and execution of broad array of prototyping activities, including storyboards, journey maps, user flows, and low-medium resolution prototypes
Partnering with Innovation Directors and Innovation Consultants to test new ideas and help shape opportunities to iterate based on user feedback
Participating in each phase of the design process to understand problems, identify solutions, and identify next steps
Leveraging key digital design and whiteboarding tools (including Mural, Miro, InVision, Figma, and Adobe XD) to complete tasks efficiently and effectively
Experimenting with new ways to communicate information to wide-ranging stakeholders
Designing materials (largely PowerPoint) to convey key messages in a visually compelling manner; partnering with Innovation Director and Innovation Lead to incorporate feedback and revise as needed
Producing consistently strong visual work
Modeling key mindsets for team including empathy, human-centered design, and design thinking to drive continuous improvement
Learning about new industry trends to inform work products
Contributing to innovation design programming, as needed
Communicating effectively with teammates to ensure project tasks are completed in a timely and effective manner
Assisting with ad hoc design needs
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field required ( Design, Human-Centered Design, Psychology, Human Factors, Information Science or HCI, Graphic Design )
Minimum of 0-2+ years of prior experience in design
Experience using human-centered design/design-thinking, lean start-up, agile and/or other innovative science processes and mindsets to drive results preferred
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, includ Adobe XD
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, includuing Microsoft PowerPoint
Knowledge of digital whiteboarding tools such as Mural or Miro; experience preferred
Experience in user or consumer research, including interviews, surveys, ethnography, testing, etc.
Experience making and editing video
Experience with tools such as Figma, Sketch, InVision, and Axure
Interest in learning new digital and physical prototyping tools
Ability to learn new prototyping tools easily
Ability to effectively communicate ideas and make presentations
Ability to identify, test, and use new design tools easily
Relentless curiosity and openness to learning new skills, systems, and processes
Eagerness to generate new ideas to improve consumer experiences, and ability to apply a fresh perspective to existing processes
Flexibility and aptitude to thrive in an Agile environment
Clean visual design aesthetic with attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to accept feedback and work in a professional manner
Capacity to handle many tasks concurrently, work independently, and work under and meet deadlines

Hourly Range: $31.75 - $38.81
The job posting range is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs and affordability.
This job is also eligible for variable pay.
