Job Description

The Department of Public Safety is the largest state agency with 26,000 employees. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, as well as retirement. This position will be assigned to the 4 (four) test kitchens located in Wake County. This position requires direct custody of six to nine offenders away from their assigned prison. This position requires supervisory skills and ability to teach food service management skills, sanitation, safety and train offenders in the Food Service & Nutrition Assistant Apprenticeship Program. This position requires the ability to operate with minimum supervision. This position requires effective communication; oral and written skills, knowledge of accounting, offender training evaluation, efficient computer skills, operational knowledge of commercial food-service equipment. Ensure correct methods of cooking and baking are used in the preparation of all foods. Will provide instruction to offenders in the policies and procedures governing food service which includes preparation, service, receiving, storage, and sanitation. Note to Current State Employees: The Salary Grade for this position is NC05. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. These KSAs, along with the minimum education and experience listed, are required in order to be deemed "eligible" for the position therefore you must provide supporting information, within the body of your application, to demonstrate your possession of each KSA listed. Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
  • Knowledge of operating a POS register and reporting daily financial activities.
  • Knowledge of large-scale food production and food service activities.
  • Five (5) years of commercial and/or institutional food service experience to include three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR- An equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
