The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) provides leadership, oversight, funding, support, and accountability for the Commonwealth's approximately 400 school districts that educate close to 1 million public school children each year. We also oversee programs that serve 20,000 adult learners each year.
The Department's work is divided into nine areas: administration and finance, deeper learning, district support, educational options, instructional support, legal, planning and research, strategic initiatives, and student assessment.
DESE seeks to hire a contracted athletics program specialist to support the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Initiatives and programming related to athletics The experienced athletics program specialist will provide support in the following areas:
- Supports DESE initiatives and programming related to athletics
- Builds working relationships with district Athletic leads and representatives in districts and schools
- Conducts district and school visits related to athletic programming
- Works closely with these organizations in regard to athletics in districts and schools:
o Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA)
o Massachusetts School Administrator Association (MSAA)
o Massachusetts Secondary School Athletic Directors Association (MSSADA)
o Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (MASS)
o Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC)
o And other organizations and partners related to PreK-12 public school athletics.
- Serves as DESE’s liaison to the Attorney General’s Office Addressing Hate in School Sports Initiative
- Develops relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders to effectively convey the Department’s core mission and work;
- Performs other duties as assigned;
- Based on assignment, travel throughout the Commonwealth is required.
This contracted position will be part-time (18 to 22.5 hours/week) and primarily in the districts. The contractor will be required to come into the DESE office in Malden, MA for meetings, and to attend events around the state as required, including during evenings and weekends as determined by event schedules.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience collaborating with others as part of a team
- Ability to create resources such as reports or schedules accurately and with attention to detail
- Comfort working with technology, including Zoom, Microsoft Office products (Word/Excel/Outlook), and online survey tools such as Alchemer

- Experience with athletic programming in districts and student athletes.
- Has familiarity and knowledge of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework, including health, physical education, and social- emotional learning competencies
- Bachelor’s degree
