Cedars-Sinai Cancer remains fully committed to community outreach, engagement and partnerships to reduce cancer health disparities in Los Angeles. As a result, Cedars-Sinai Cancer has launched Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) and is co-located with disparities researchers in the Cancer Research Center for Health Equity where we conduct research to reduce health disparities in Los Angeles County. THE COE is charged with outreach, partnerships and policy initiatives that address cancer related inequities in underserved communities.
Please note this role will be located in the Antelope Valley
The Community Outreach Coordinator conducts direct outreach at the community-level with identified communities and populations (e.g. LGBTQ, Hispanic/Latino, African American, API and immigrant populations) in an effort to provide cancer education, build bonds, relationships, and partnerships. The coordinator will seek community and health leaders in targeted communities to help guide outreach activities and inform cultural tailoring of cancer education programs. A key goal of the coordinator will be to organize communities around initiatives that reduce cancer health disparities, and promote prevention and early detection programs.
This position, under the supervision of the Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) Director is responsible for bringing together important cancer information, resources and evidence-based awareness programs to communities in the Antelope Valley, in particular support the African American community. In addition, he/she/they will be responsible for data collection when necessary and will represent the COE in community settings. He/she will also collaborate with colleagues and experts to conduct trainings in the community. This position will provide feedback to the director(s), principal investigators, clinicians and researchers, and administrators on community priorities, needs and barriers on a regular basis to help catalyze the development of research projects and needed community programs. He/She/They will also serve as a relationship manager to key partners and maintain regulation communication and be responsive to their needs in a timely manager. In addition, the coordinator will promote participation in research and clinical trials for underrepresented and underserved populations.
We are seeking a dynamic, action-oriented, and culturally competent community outreach and programs coordination professional in this position with exceptional interpersonal, communication /Social Media and data management skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds
- Assist with data collection, analysis, and report preparation
- Coordination of specific aspects of program planning and implementation, including adhering to timelines and achieving necessary outcomes
- Participating in events, conferences, health fairs and other community activities to represent the COE
- Coordinating cancer education programs at the neighborhood-level (e.g. Antelope Valley and other areas identified as priorities by COE leadership, CS Cancer leadership and/or CRCHE leadership)
- Regularly promote participation in research and clinical trials and provide feedback to research team on barriers to access
- Supporting regular communications activities related to cancer in the community and with partners. For example, working in the social media space and creating news stories and informing the public about cancer risk and risk reduction including activites the COE is undertaking.
- Support relationship management and regularly communicate with partners and support their participation in a Community Advisory Board when needed.
- Assist with various office tasks, including photocopying, preparing packets, answering phones, and filing
- Developing and testing cancer education materials and messages
- Drafting e-mails, documents, or letters as assigned
- Assist with all aspects of event management: o Act as point person for event set up (securing space, transporting materials, ordering food, etc.) o Assist in the design, production, and dissemination of collateral marketing materials (letters, brochures, and flyers) o Invitation and guests’ communications and list management o Facility set-up and break-down
- Developing and managing relationships with key community organizations, stakeholders, including supporting the Community Outreach and Engagement efforts.
Skills required:
- Background in health education, community outreach and social determinants of health.
- Reliable transportation is a must
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Program and event planning and evaluation skills
- Proficient analytical thinking and creative skills
- Ideal candidate is highly motivated, and has the ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
- A collaborative working style
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends occasionally
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Background in data collection (surveys, focus groups, interviews)
- Ability to develop and maintain data-bases
- Excellent public relations skills and proficient in using social media platforms frequently utilized by the target communities (multiethnic)
- Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail
- The ability to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision
- Exceptional knowledge of and familiarity with Antelope Valley communities including the African American community spaces and organizations in the area.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED
- 2 years experience participating in community outreach activities.
- 1-2 years understanding of social determinants of health in the target communities and how to address.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree
