The work of GLAAD is a campaign-style work environment that operates on a breaking news cycle; there is always a high level of energy and rapid activity for everyone in the organization; preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, challenging anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations, and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 60 staff works out of our Headquarters in New York, Los Angeles, and Remote Employees.


The Opportunity


The GLAAD Communities of Color and Media Internship will contribute on creating authentic and accurate portrayals and stories of LGBTQ people of color in media. Our Communities of Color and Media team is focused on implementing GLAAD's goals for promoting visibility and understanding among communities of color, particularly Black communities, through the media as a means to educate the public on the issues facing the community and accelerate acceptance.

Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities


Responsibilities


  • Six mandatory workshop sessions will be scheduled during the 12 weeks. Interns must attend these events. If they cannot participate, they should connect with their managers.
  • Assist with media training to local advocates, organizations, and talent
  • Identify and connect with Black LGBTQ+ events, partners, and organizers
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
  • This is a remote role, but if located in NYC, it will be hybrid and may, at times function out of the NYC office location.
  • Work with Director to develop innovative programming
  • Write Op-Ed, blogs, articles, and social media toolkits for projects or campaigns


Qualifications


  • Basic understanding of Google Workspace landscape
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to work under pressure with a tight turnaround
  • Initiative for motivation and problem-solving
  • Start Date: September 25th, End Date: December 11th
  • Availability to work up to 30 hours a week
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with both internal and outside stakeholders
  • Familiarity with issues impacting the LGBTQ community, particularly regarding racial and social justice. Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of diverse LGBTQ communities.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter
  • Inclusivity is a vital part of GLAAD’s work. The skills necessary to create a more diverse and inclusive environment are a plus.


Education


  • The ideal candidate is anyone interested in working with us, a recent graduate, or an undergraduate/graduate student in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Public Health, and/or Social Justice areas, or any other related fields.


New Knowledge & Skills Intern Will Learn & Compensation


  • Community engagement and organizing, Program development and implementation, Project management and tracking, and Event planning.
  • 12-week program with an overall stipend of $6K and a possibility of hybrid in-person workdays if based in NYC
