Job Description

We, at Leggett & Platt Inc., are searching for a Commodity Manager- Fabric to support our Bedding business. Did you know we have been revolutionizing the sleep industry since 1883? That’s right! As a Commodity Manager- Fabric for Leggett & Platt, Incorporated Adjustable Bed Group, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining commodity strategies that support the company’s business objectives. You will also evaluate and recommend vendors to the business unit while managing the ongoing relationship with key suppliers. The Commodity Manager will manage engineered commodities as well as single sourcing requests from engineering and operations.


So, what will you be doing as a Commodity Manager- Fabric?

  • Review and resolve any discrepancies with supplier invoices, grievances, claims, conflicts, product non-conformance or quality issues
  • Research potential vendors and compare their products, prices, and services.
  • Coordinate the exchange of technical information regarding product and product processing with adequate safeguards and confidentiality.
  • Analyse the effect that sourcing and supply decisions have on total business costs (internal and the supply chain). Ability to evaluate different supply route options e.g. from single part to build package to determine optimum cost route using appropriate evaluation tools.
  • Support goals and objectives as established by business unit management.
  • Develop and implement commodity strategies to create an efficient supply chain and reduce commodity purchase costs.
  • Conduct analyses of market conditions and trends and use this information to predict commodity pricing and availability.
  • Analyse and implement innovative supply opportunities that deliver best total cost position – part, freight, cost of quality, and inventory
  • Provide goods & services projections to key suppliers to ensure product availability.
  • Rationalize the supplier base through the solicitation of competitive bids. Put together competitive RFQ’s, analyze received quotations, select or recommend new suppliers.
  • Participation on cross functional teams to address and resolve problems.
  • Can effectively negotiate in all situations – with internal customers and suppliers, creating win/win situations.
  • Work independently between internal functional groups and external suppliers.
  • Able to discuss and agree to the contract terms with suppliers. Ensure the correct terms of business references are used on orders.


To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • Sourcing knowledge in other commodities such as wood, plastics, or electronic components.
  • Experience in near shoring in North and South America.
    • Extensive knowledge in Mexico of cut and sew and textile production.
  • Experience with the sourcing of composite materials
  • Textile finishing and processing knowledge
  • Experience creating, documenting and understanding flat patterns
  • Awareness of cutting edge innovations in the textile industry
  • Knowledge of upstream supply chain for textile manufacturing
  • 5-7 Years’ Experience
  • Ability to specify fabrics and patterns for specific project requirements
  • Knowledge and ability to advise engineering team at a high level on cost comparison of preliminary designs and materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of textile and cut and sew fabrication processes.
  • Not required but the below experience would be considered a plus.
    • Experience creating, documenting and understanding flat patterns
    • Experience with the sourcing of composite materials
    • Understanding of textile bonding capabilities such as lamination and ultrasonic welding
    • Textile finishing and processing knowledge
    • Knowledge of upstream supply chain for textile manufacturing
    • Ability to specify fabrics and patterns for specific project requirements
    • Understanding of textile quality measures
    • Awareness of cutting edge innovations in the textile industry
    • Sourcing knowledge in other commodities such as wood, plastics, or electronic components.
  • Understanding of textile quality measures
  • Ability to travel up to 30%
  • Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of all textiles, both knits and wovens.
  • Understanding of textile bonding capabilities such as lamination and ultrasonic welding
  • Engineering Degree or Business Degree with Industrial Experience
  • Extensive knowledge in Mexico of cut and sew and textile production.
