Job Description
Clinical Billing Specialist
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is one of the world's most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
  • Charge Capture/Reconciliation Ensure that a charge is entered for each "arrived" or admitted patient in the Epic system. For "arrived" or admitted patients for whom a charge has not been entered, contact the provider to request a completed charge be submitted and document this initial request for charge completion in Epic. Reconcile inpatient and outpatient charges for all clinicians in the Epic system daily, follow up on charges not previously completed. Provide a second request for completion for any encounters still in "uncharged" status. If a third request for completion is required, copy the Financial Analyst and Department Administrator on the communication. If feedback from a provider demonstrates that the patient was not seen by a provider, enter the appropriate statistical code, as indicated in the Division of Cancer Medicine Electronic Charge Capture policies (Inpatient policy and Outpatient policy). Maintain a database of charges and any action taken. Enter all charges into the departmental databases within 24 hours of reconciliation completion. Add any service activity that does not appear in the departmental database. Understand the medical terminology, in order to enter the correct diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Education & Training Provide incoming staff (advanced practice providers and providers) information on the charge entry process for Epic and documentation requirements. Provide recommendations to providers to improve documentation accuracy and timelines to meet institutional compliance guidelines. Instruct personnel on processes and procedures and new system applications.
  • Communication & Documentation Communicate with PBS and Revenue Integrity on any billing issues and works with them and clinicians to correct issues. Perform reconciliation of the progress notes to patient activity. Reconcile against the daily census, making discharges, transfers and expirations a priority. Checks the progress note for the patient's name, medical record number and date of service. Knowledge of which CPT, E&M and ICD codes to use in order to successfully enter the correct charge in Epic based off the information on the progress notes. Understands the components of documentation to ensure charge accuracy. Primary contact for provider questions and concerns relevant to Epic billing. Maintain up-to-date information for divisional Clinic Sessions report on the division's Operations Reports SharePoint site.
  • Reporting Activities Maintain up-to-date data for internal department spreadsheets tracking provider productivity. Run Epic queries to identify open encounters and prepare communication to providers. Assist with preparing departmental responses for institutional reports detailing lost opportunities for revenue. Identify trends and shifts in billing practices and researches/reports to Financial Analyst and Department Administrator as appropriate.


Other duties as assigned.
Education Required - Associate's degree in Business Administration or related field.
Experience Required - Three years professional fee or technical billing experience in healthcare, insurance or related field. May substitute required education degree with additional years of professional billing experience on a one to one basis.
