Job Description

The USC Office of Risk Management and Insurance is seeking an experienced Claims Manager to join its team!

About the Opportunity

The Claims Manager oversees, administers, and supervises the processing, evaluation, assessment, adjustment, and resolution of liability claims brought against the university. Monitors, advises, strategizes with and makes recommendations to internal/external counsel as needed on personal injury litigation matters. Collaborates with the Office of General Counsel and other relevant stakeholders to provide timely reports to insurers/insurance brokers on matters involving the university’s insurance portfolio.

The Claims Manager:

  • Directly supervises claims examiners, ensuring performance standards are met and compliance with all policies and procedures. Oversees work with third-party administrators (e.g., investigations, analyses, submitted claims/incident reports) and determines potential subrogation opportunities against third parties regarding property/casualty claims. Responsible for managing claims involving damage to university owned/leased real and personal property.
  • Maintains communications with leadership and relevant stakeholders regarding risk mitigation opportunities and needed risk analyses. Meets with university partners to review open/active claims and present strategies for progression. Provides reports on work to reduce or eliminate repeated claims. Maintains currency with changes in regulations and technologies which may affect operations. Ensures staff and leadership are informed of any updates in a timely manner.
  • Promotes an environment that fosters inclusive relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions through ideas, words, and actions that uphold principles of the USC Code of Ethics. Establishes and maintains appropriate network of professional contacts. Participates in professional organizations (e.g., attends meetings, seminars, conferences). Maintains continuity of any required or desirable certifications, if applicable.
  • Responsible for managing, auditing, and maintaining claims/incidents and financial data entered into database systems. Conducts claims meetings with relevant stakeholders (e.g., USC Captive Office) and reviews documentation. Supports stakeholders with data updates to ensure accuracy of submissions to actuaries. Responsible for maintaining relationships and workflows (e.g., reviewing agreements, processing invoices).
  • Collaborates with the Office of General Counsel and other relevant stakeholders to provide timely reports to insurers/insurance brokers on matters involving the university’s insurance portfolio. Gathers and reviews all claim-related data to determine applicable coverage. Works with brokers to respond to insurer acknowledgements, claim status requests and coverage position responses. Prepares and presents claim reports to relevant stakeholders. Attends mediation and arbitration as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position of Claims Manager will meet the following preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree / J.D.
  • Certified as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Claims (AIC) and/or a
  • Extensive experience in international risk management, mediation and small claims.
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
  • 7 years of experience
  • Demonstrated data analytics and risk processing skills.

Minimum Qualifications

All candidates for the position of Claims Manager must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Exemplary understanding/interpretation of insurance policy language and risk management practices.
  • 5 years of experience in claims management/advocacy in insurance, including extensive experience with complex casualty claims and litigation management.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements (e.g., GLBA, PCI, FERPA, HIPAA). Ability to work closely with business leaders in a high pressure, fast-paced, highly collaborative environment with multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiation.
  • Ability to understand data analytics and dashboarding.

The annual base salary range for this position is $128,255.88 - $146,440.68. The Risk Management and Insurance Department protects the physical, financial, human and reputational assets of the University. We focus on understanding and managing risks associated with these assets. We provide advice on risk-related matters, manage & establish the University’s insurance portfolio strategy and assists in the development of programs, policies and best practices to reduce the University’s total cost of risk.

We partner and serve the USC Community to safeguard and balance its risk and opportunities by managing risks in a variety of ways, such as transferring risk contractually or by way of insurance programs. We conduct risk assessment evaluations, risk trending reports & risk monitoring to proactively mitigate risk across the university.
