Provide supervision and care to high-risk children and youth in DSS care that are seeking placement, to ensure their safety, well-being and needs are met/maintained, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed and supervised under the Social Work Program Manager. This position is a part-time job that could include days, evenings, weekends and/or holidays on an as needed basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Providing supervision and care over high-risk children/youth who are staying at the Department of Social Services building while awaiting placement. Performing crisis intervention or de-scalation tactics when needs arise with the children/youth in your care. Ensuring the safety of the children/youth. Preparing meals with and/or for children/youth. Helping children/youth adhere to a schedule such as getting up in the morning, brushing teeth, taking a shower, getting ready for school, doing homework, etc. Transporting children/youth to school and/or as needed for medical care. Providing direction, guidance and redirection to children/youth as needed regarding appropriate behaviors, etc. Administer Medication as applicable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively and to engage with children/youth, family members, and varying levels of professionals. Ability to work independently. Ability to handle unexpected emergency or crisis situations as they arise. Ability to apply crisis intervention, non-directive, directive and boundary communication skills once trained. Ability to handle confrontational situations that may arise.
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of experience working with children/youth in high-risk or vulnerable situations that require crisis intervention, de-escalation, boundary communication, or addressing behavioral issues, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in social work or human services related field preferred but not required. First-Aid and CPR certified preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
