DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Cancer Registry is a department of the St. Charles Cancer Center, which is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data on cancer patients. This includes reporting internally and externally to the Oregon State Cancer Registry and National Cancer Database. The data provided to facilitate the assessment and improvement in the quality of cancer care for our patients. The Cancer Center possesses accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Cancer Registry Specialist is responsible for performing duties related to case finding, and follow-up as set forth by the American College of Surgeons - Commission on Cancer for accredited cancer programs. Confers with physicians to schedule patients for presentation at tumor board meetings. Creates tumor board agenda and collects the pertinent medical records. This position does not manage other Caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Performs ongoing identification of all reportable cancer cases, which meet current state and ACoS reporting requirements.
Reviews new patient lists, pathology reports, and x-ray reports on a weekly basis to find appropriate cases.
Enters new cases into a suspense file in the registry software.
Performs accurate follow-up of cancer cases by interpreting disease status and update patients currently on active follow up in the cancer registry through use of multiple electronic systems, query of off-site facilities, external cancer databases and physician offices.
Responds to follow-up requests from other cancer registries.
Responsible for maintaining ACoS required follow up percentages for long-term and recent follow-up.
Coordinates physician requests to schedule patients for tumor board presentation.
Collects relevant medical records, pathology, and x-ray reports from various sources for tumor board case presentation.
Creates the tumor board agenda and sends out notification to physicians and other staff.
Reviews obituaries to update case status and provides notification to medical records and physicians.
Performs necessary job functions in absence of the supervisor to support tumor board meetings.
Knowledge of Protected Health Information (PHI), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

EDUCATION
Required: High school diploma or GED and completion of anatomy and medical terminology courses.
Preferred: Associates degree in Health Information Management or related health care field.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required: N/A
Preferred: Registered Health Information technician (RHIT).
EXPERIENCE
Required: Completion of anatomy and medical terminology courses.
Preferred: Two years’ experience in a health care setting, experience with Epic EMR.

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
