Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Catering and Conference Services, the Banquet Manager manages, plans and directs execution of all Occidental member related catered events, large scale and VIP banquets as well as private banquets. Manages all aspects of alcohol service and control. Serves as the Department liaison to the Campus Events Advisory Committee (CEAC). Contributes to the cultivation, development and success of the events operation. Ensures all events are successful through positive experiences for internal members, clients, guests and staff.


Job Duties

  • Manage the planning, organization and execution of outstanding catered events. Meets with internal members of Occidental's community as well as private event clients to develop and provide oversight of external events that meet department and college expectations. Ensures all external catering contracts, payment schedules and certificates of insurance are complete and up to date. Tracks calendar due dates and revenue. Maintains records and creates reports - (Essential)
  • Maintains par levels of catering equipment within established annual budget. Responsible for regular inventory, maintenance, proper storage and recommendations for repair and purchase. - (Essential)
  • Contributes positively and effectively to the total team management effort within Hospitality Services, allowing for many large special events, major projects and peak workload periods. - (Essential)
  • Manages the storage and inventory of alcoholic beverages including beer, wine, spirits and mixers for consumption. Ensures all staff members are certified in adherence to ABC regulations, training, and best practices for the hospitality industry. Partners with vendors, places orders, audits received invoices, and manages costs. In conjunction with direct supervisor, manages issues with internal and external clients that involve alcohol service - (Essential)
  • Serves as Campus Dining's representative on CEAC. Prepares for and attends weekly meetings, and follows through on departmental communication. - (Essential)
  • Meets weekly with Chefs to review upcoming events, Banquet Event Orders (BEO), and informs all necessary departments of any updates or changes. Experience using Catertrax catering software is highly preferred. - (Essential)
  • Manages contract, budget, inventories and supplies of catering linens and employee uniforms for Hospitality Services. Audits invoices, manages costs, communicates changes with vendors and follows up on discrepancies. - (Essential)
  • Assists with sales & marketing of all External Catered Events when required. - (Essential)
  • Creates accurate and comprehensive banquet event orders for distribution to all internal departments, providing signage when required, as well as daily direction to Events Services staff members to effectively execute events in a timely and efficient manner. Collaborates with accounts payables to ensure accurate event invoices. - (Essential)
  • Adapts to changing business and technology needs. Learns and implements new procedures and technology as appropriate. - (Essential)
  • Provides daily direction of staff to effectively execute events in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors daily deployment of staff for event management. - (Essential)
  • In conjunction with Director of Catering, participates in a dynamic package creation process that reflects changing desires of clients and menu pricing to achieve financial targets. - (Essential)
  • Hires, supervises, mentors and supports the Assistant Manager for Catering & Special Event and Event Services staff. Actively participates in training, development, scheduling, evaluation and performance management. Follows Human Resource procedures in accordance with government regulations, campus and department policies, and the bargaining unit contract. - (Essential)
  • Ensures staff, guest, food, equipment and facility safety at all times. Performs all duties in a safe manner. Takes appropriate measures to prevent hazards, including training staff. Reports hazards as required through proper channels. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in culinary arts, business management, hospitality or related field.
Three to five years management experience in a high-volume catering operation.
Demonstrated extensive technical skills, knowledge, creativity and abilities in the catering field.
Demonstrated ability to provide superior customer service and adapt to the desires of a diverse clientele.
Demonstrable skills in leadership,supervision, written, electronic/digital and verbal communication.
Physical ability to tolerate prolonged standing and walking for extended periods and to bend and lift up to 30 pounds.
Demonstrated proficiency in office technology applications including Google Drive, MSWord and Excel with experience in routinely creating and using spreadsheets.
Demonstrated adaptability to a flexible work schedule, including working evenings and weekends as event schedules dictate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a Higher Education environment is preferred.
ServSafe Manager Certification
College Designated Driver status
Serves as the administrator for the College’s liquor license & newly required RBS Training Program, includes: record keeping, scheduling of employee training and certification, input into the ABC RBS portal.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse community of students, employees, faculty, staff and others.
Possess a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the College.


EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $68,000 - $75,000/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
