Pay Range
$103,290 - $139,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
We have multiple openings for Autonomous Systems Engineers to support programmatic work in the Autonomous Sensors group within the Defense Systems Program. You will work on a multi-disciplinary team to design, develop, and deploy novel technologies to meet critical mission needs on projects in the Global Security and Engineering Directorates. Occasional travel will be required. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Participate in the requirements definition, analysis, design, implementation, debugging, testing, and optimization of autonomous systems.
- Provide engineering solutions to a variety of projects in one or more of the following technical areas: wireless communication and networking, robotics, sensor testing and integration, diagnostics and sensor development, electro-optic systems, data analysis and data fusion, and environmental hardening and testing.
- Engage team members frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives, functioning as an effective team member on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Contribute to the integration of electronics components in a lab environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Develop conceptual designs of autonomous systems, test prototypes, and associated diagnostics.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
- Perform independent technical analysis to provide solutions for a diverse range of moderate to complex issues.
- Work independently to define and execute project tasks under limited direction from senior engineering and scientific staff.
- Provide engineering solutions to moderately complex problems involving largely identifiable factors.
Qualifications
- Fundamental knowledge of electric circuit design and engineering hardware design.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Fundamental knowledge of one or more of the following programming tools: C, Python, MATLAB, Java, or C++.
- Fundamental knowledge and experience in two or more of the following technical areas: wireless communication and networking, robotics, sensor testing and integration, diagnostics and sensor development, electro-optic systems, data analysis and data fusion, systems engineering, control systems, or environmental hardening and testing.
- Ability to travel as needed for instrument testing, integration, and operations.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience in the application and development in one or more of the following areas: wireless communication and networking, robotics, sensor testing and integration, diagnostics and sensor development, electro-optic systems, data analysis and data fusion, and environmental hardening and testing.
- Broad experience applying effective analytical and problem-solving skills to moderately complex problems.
- Strong initiative to work independently and efficiently and prioritize tasks to meet project milestones with minimal guidance.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience in reading and interpreting mechanical, optical, and electrical specifications using drawings, datasheets, and procedure manuals.
- Master’s degree in degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience with optical, RF, or acoustic sensors.
- Experience with unmanned aerial systems or other mobile platforms.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
