We are looking for a qualified candidate to join our team in Ames, IA (hybrid) as an Automation Engineer supporting large, and global projects in our manufacturing operations as well as providing support for Assembly Process Engineers. As part of our team, you will plan, install, and support startup of our automation systems throughout our manufacturing environment. You will work with the project managers of each project with a focus on the control system. Our processes include state of the art technology such as advanced manufacturing execution systems (MES), PLCs, advanced vision systems, robotics, self-driving vehicles, human/machine interfaces (HMIs), and advanced sensors.
Job Responsibilities
- Help install and implement new equipment and processes to improve current S-Q-D-C (Safety, Quality, Delivery and Costs)
- Identify innovative technologies that could provide benefits to our operations
- Work with our integrators to create systems that can be supported internally by our Automation Technicians once installed
- Advise/support Automation Technicians and Operations teams -with in-depth knowledge- during problem solving
- All above mentioned activities also take place on a global basis
- Mentor Automation Technicians on best practices and modern technologies
- Work with global counterparts to leverage and share best practices
- Work with leaders to identify “at risk” systems and help create and upgrade replacement plans
Background & Skills
- Ability to read and interpret prints and schematics
- Flowchart problems with potential solutions
- Knowledge/understanding of machine safety systems and applicable standards (UL508, NEC 70, NFPA 79, ANSI B11, CE would be desired by not required)
- Resourcefulness and willingness to learn new skills.
- Skills and qualifications to open and work in electrical cabinets.
- Ability to effectively communicate challenges and solutions to industrial manufacturing problems in a team environment.
- Flowchart problems with potential solutions
- Experience with robotics (Fanuc, Universal Robotics, ABB)
- Ability to research unknown factors, identify and work with subject matter experts
- Strong decision-making skills, ability to prioritize work
- Prefer 4-6 years of experience with a strong manufacturing background and control systems.
- Availability to travel for global projects
- Knowledge of current and legacy industrial protocols (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Data Highway+, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus)
- PLC programming experience (Allen Bradley, Siemens)
- Practical and logical approach to problem-solving
- Ability to research unknown factors, identify and work with subject matter experts
- Resourcefulness and willingness to learn new skills.
- Interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
- Project management skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines
- Strong decision-making skills, ability to prioritize work
- Experience with PC programming and support (Python, C, C#) would be desired but not required
- Knowledge of PLC programming and support
- PLC programming experience (Allen Bradley, Siemens)
- Knowledge of current and legacy industrial protocols (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Data Highway+, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus)
- Experience with HMI/SCADA systems, prefer Ignition (Inductive Automation)
- 4 year degree in automation systems, mechatronics, or related field
- Familiarity with advanced MES systems
