The Department of Microbiology & Immunology has an exciting opportunity for a Assistant Scientist, SOM. The incumbent carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
- Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
- Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
- Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
- Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
- Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
- Contributes to basic and applied research activities and author’s scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
- Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
- Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.
- Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required.
Department Specific Functions:
Participating in basic and applied research activities [75%]: Functioning as a laboratory scientist in immunology research focusing on infectious diseases and vaccine immunology with human cellular work and responsible for experimental and scientific contributions as dictated by the needs of both extramurally and intramurally funded research. • Performing and supervising significant scientific experimental work in human immunology and mass cytometry, without responsibilities for grant-writing. • Conducting one-on-one technical and safety training of lab personnel, monitoring lab members as they execute experiments work in the lab. • Handling maintenance tasks including but not limited to ordering supplies and materials for the laboratory, general laboratory upkeep, inventories, and routine experimental support to other scientists in the program • Sharing the responsibility for conducting the human cellular immunology experiments including extensive flow cytometry and mass cytometry experiments. • Presenting findings through the authorship of scientific publications, and technical and agency reports. • Preparing patent(s) and assisting with its submission. Research Publications [20%]: • Presenting research findings through manuscripts published in high-impact peer-reviewed Journals. • Publishing either with Principal Investigator, Program Director or independently. • Performing other related duties within the Scope of the Position [5%].
