Job Description

The Random House imprint was founded in 1927 with a mission that was simple, humble, and beautifully open-ended: to publish “a few books, on the side, at random.” Random House would go on to publish more than a few books on the side—becoming a cherished home to Maya Angelou, Truman Capote, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Edmund Morris, and many, many others—publishing authors who would win the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. Today, Random House remains as dedicated as ever to a diverse and far-ranging list of fiction and non-fiction, one that is bound only by our commitment to the highest quality and the size of our authors’ imaginations.

Hogarth Books, an imprint of Random House, is named in honor of The Hogarth Press, founded in 1917 by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. Today’s Hogarth publishes fiction and non-fiction by exceptional writers who are deeply engaged with the world, with an emphasis on new and international perspectives. Our authors have won and been finalists for most major literary prizes, including the Booker Prize, the Booker International Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

We are seeking an experienced, creative, and enthusiastic marketer to join the team. This title-marketing position, reporting to the Director of Marketing, will lead innovative consumer-facing campaigns to bring the imprints’ publications to the largest possible readership. The primary focus of the role is literary fiction across both lists, with additional responsibility for narrative non-fiction published by Hogarth Books. This is an exciting opportunity to work across two renowned lists.

The Assistant Director of Marketing will be hands-on in strategy as well as the creation and execution of customized campaigns for a rich assortment of authors shaping the cultural and literary conversation, working closely with Publishing, Editorial, Publicity, Sales, Copy, Design, and Media Buying, and as a member of the renowned Random House Marketing Team.

    • Bespoke partnership opportunities
    • Social media strategy
  • Creates and leads innovative title-marketing campaigns based on market data and consumer trends for upcoming publications, across a roster of titles, with a specific focus on literary fiction and select non-fiction titles
  • Works with Director of Marketing to effectively share goals for each title with Publishing, Editorial, Publicity, Sales, and the author team
  • Social media strategy
  • Bespoke partnership opportunities
  • Creation of influencer marketing campaigns, custom audiences, and organizational and brand cross-promotions to activate word of mouth and digital activations that drive sales

The Essentials:

  • Superb communication skills with talent to speak fluently and effectively with top authors and key stakeholders
  • A strong history in book promotion or related media (magazines, music, film, etc.)
  • A background with multi-cultural marketing a plus
  • Ability to set and meet goals under an established budget
  • Highly proficient with MS Office suite and an ability to learn new applications
  • Collaborative, curious reader who is both knowledgeable and passionate about this space and the key authors and books within
  • Strong aesthetic sensibility; able to conceptualize and execute a campaign that is impactful in both messaging and visuals
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated, with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage a busy inbox with timely follow-up skills
