Job Description
The
mission
of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date,
subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

The New York Times is seeking a Deputy to the Editorial Director of Books, Events, and TV/Film. This role will focus on supporting the work of our editorial extensions in these areas.
The right candidate will be a gifted editorial thinker. They will be a voracious consumer of all types of culture and media, someone who is deeply curious, and a passionate generalist. They will understand the significance of the New York Times brand and its products (NYT Games, NYT Cooking, The Athletic, Wirecutter, etc.) and be excited to think about how new expressions of Times journalism might be valuable to the Times audience and help broaden it. They will enjoy making connections between the world-class work we are producing at NYT and what the market and a broad audience wants. They are passionate about storytelling in multiple formats and have a track record of producing powerful creative work. They will be excited to drive new creative projects, to generate new ideas, and be excited to work at the intersection of editorial and commerce.
The right candidate will also be a project management dynamo–all of this work requires collaboration and project tracking and working across teams. Alongside editorial skill, the role requires top-notch communication skills and the ability to work within multiple sets of priorities. This is a role for someone who relishes collaboration.
Responsibilities:
  • Serving as a stand-in for the Executive Editorial Director in internal and external meetings where necessary.
  • Overseeing all editorial project management across the books, events, and TV/film portfolio.
  • Attentive tracking of industry trends and successes.
  • Working across editorial and commercial teams to align on strategic and creative goals and to ideate and execute editorial projects.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Proven organizational/project management skills.
  • Used to working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Track record of successful creative collaboration and comfort working with subject-area experts like media personalities, product leads, editors and/or art directors.
  • At least 5 years of experience in one or more of these industries: unscripted TV development, books, editorial events.
  • Excellent creative ideas and taste.
  • Experience assigning and editing creative projects in multiple formats (magazine issues, event series, etc., not just individual stories),
  • Good people skills, sterling communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • People-managing experience is a plus.
  • Entrepreneurial curiosity.
This role will report into Caitlin Roper, Executive Editorial Director of Books, Film/TV and Events.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $170,000.00 and $185,000.00.
The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
