Putnam Books for Young Readers is looking for a talented editorial assistant to join their team! The editorial assistant reports to a Senior Executive Editor and a Senior Editor, who both primarily edit illustrated works such as picture books and graphic novels. The editorial assistant provides administrative support, reads and evaluates submissions, and oversees the entire production process from submission to published book.
Responsibilities include:
- Facilitates editorial process by drafting promotional copy (including title information sheets, flap copy, catalog copy, and online descriptive copy), preparing acquisition paperwork and profit & loss assessments, and filling out internal forms used by other departments
- Provides administrative support (maintains digital files and metadata, updates systems, processes expenses, helps with department responsibilities, keeps track of projects’ due dates, maintains correspondence, fields questions from authors and agents, etc.)
- Evaluates manuscripts and proposals (logs submissions, writes reader’s reports, researches comp titles, drafts rejection letters)

- Strong interest in children’s publishing, especially graphic novels, illustrated fiction, chapter books, and picture books
- Self-starter with impeccable attention to detail
- Prior book publishing and/or media industry experience a plus
- Strong presentation, communication, organization, and writing skills
- Ability to prioritize, be proactive, and multi-task in a deadline driven environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
The salary for this position is $48,000.00. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
