DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Director of the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) with dotted line reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Resource Administration. In future state, this position will move to the Dean's Office of the future School of Computing, Information and Data Science (SCIDS), reporting directly to the Dean of the new School. The Assistant Dean will be responsible for the administrative oversight for HDSI with the future addition of oversight for all units reporting to the Dean's Office of the new School.

Responsibilities include long-range planning, resource administration, institutional and policy development and analysis and administrative leadership. Through collegial relationships with the unit Directors and Business Managers, provides guidance and serves as a resource on a wide variety of issues. Serves as lead financial and administrative officer and strategic consultant to the Director on resources and advises on all aspects of University policies and procedures. Acts on behalf of the Director in financial and administrative matters via delegated authorities. Represents the unit on campus and University committees, as appropriate. Exhibits strong focus on strategic planning to build the future School, which involves working with central administration, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and other School partners. This position also partners with the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative, creativity and resourcefulness to accomplish goals.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the University and campus community, including its policies, procedures, practices and culture.

  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Strong ability to provide management and leadership in the area of information systems and operations.
  • Proven organization, assessment, problem solving, negotiation and decision-making skills with expertise in clarifying and resolving conflict situations and developing attainable goals and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to understand and interpret complex materials and data and to formulate and present oral and written material in a logical and comprehensive manner.
  • Demonstrated management experience with proven ability to analyze, interpret and apply good management and business principles, practices and techniques.
  • Demonstrated skill to locate, identify, analyze and synthesize large quantities of financial or other data, identifying needs and developing recommendations.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and supervisory skills, with a proven record of working collaboratively while achieving outcomes. Proven ability to function effectively in a diverse, ever-changing, and unpredictable environment. Proven ability to maintain confidentiality in sensitive situations.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Proven experience in financial and accounting systems, including modeling, forecasting, and planning, Ability to develop and implement such systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to project budget costs, coordinate multiple projects, adapt programmatic objectives to changes in resources, and establish priorities as affected by budgetary issues.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Overtime and weekends may be required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel.
  • Must pass a background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $92,600 - $232,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $44.35 - $111.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
