The ideal candidate for the Assistant Accountant role will perform entry level professional accounting duties requiring the application of accounting principles and practices in a wide range of activities. Work is performed under the supervision of a professional accountant for a review of work and reports for conformance to established procedures.

The Assistant Accountant will review and check such financial records as contract billing, invoicing, projects, purchase orders and budget amendments for accuracy and conformance to standards. They will prepare a variety of accounting and budget reports for review by their supervisor. They will assist in maintaining all budgetary functions regarding appropriations, adjustments, encumbrances and expenditures. This position will assist in reconciling and balancing financial and budget reports. They will assist in the preparation and execution of the district participation, internal charges and budget development processes. They will also assume other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by their supervisor.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:

Must hold permanent status as an Assistant Accountant; or: Must be reachable on current Assistant Accountant civil service list; or:

Must meet minimum civil service qualifications for a provisional appointment as follows:

• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance; OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
• An Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance and two (2) years of satisfactory accounting or auditing experience; 2-5 years preferred. OR;
