About This Role:

• This position occasionally assists the County’s site inspectors in inspecting landscaping and trees impacted by construction and prescribing appropriate treatment in accordance with nursery and tree care industry standards, the DCSM, and the approved plans. May participate in meetings held on construction sites to resolve tree-related issues.
• Under the general direction of the County Arborist, develops and manages the County’s reforestation and urban forest management programs.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or G.E.D. and 5 years of related experience.

Preferences:

• Four-year Degree in urban forestry, Arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, or closely related field.

• Ability to identify woody plants common to the Mid-Atlantic region.

• Experience designing and/or implementing tree planting, reforestation, and related projects.

• Experience in the design, review and/or implementation of land development plans for landscape buffers, tree cover, landscaping, tree preservation, zoning requirements and other landscape standards.

• Ability to create and deliver presentations to medium-sized audiences.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid ISA Certified Arborist credential issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (upon hire) and the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (upon hire) or be able to obtain these credentials within one year. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a valid Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Category 2 or 3A Pesticide Applicator Certification.

Work Schedule:

8:30 AM to 5 PM, with 1-hour lunch.

Starting Salary Range:

Salary Range: $69,186 to $121,973
Hiring Range: $69,186 to $95,579
