Bachelor's degree and 7 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in an occupational health and safety, engineering, management, or business discipline
Safety, security, and/or emergency management related national certifications, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), or Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) .
Additional years of progressively responsible experience implementing compliance programs designed to address federal and state safety standards.
Experience in an academic or university research environmental or in a federally funded research development center.
Prior supervisory experience of safety and security staff.
Project management experience, including budgetary oversight.

Ames National Laboratory is seeking candidates for the position of Director for Safety and Security Services (DSSS). This position directs and fulfills leadership responsibilities for the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) department, and the Security and Emergency Services Division (SES). The DSSS represents the Laboratory in discussions and negotiations with DOE officials and state and federal regulators, and provides Laboratory leadership with analysis of requirements, potential vulnerabilities, and implementation strategies related to ESH, SES, and other compliance issues.

The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, document a track record of sound leadership, and display competency in negotiation and diplomacy. Comprehensive knowledge of environment, safety, health, security, emergency management, continuity of operations, and DOE standards and practices is critical, along with the ability to apply this knowledge in a research environment. Excellent computer skills and the ability to navigate and utilize various data bases and business applications are needed to organize, manipulate, and present information effectively.

This position will have at least two direct reports (Assistant Director for ESH, and Assistant Director for SES), and multiple indirect reports, including ESH and SES professionals, and merit Plant Protection staff. The DSSS reports to the Ames Laboratory Chief Operations Officer (COO).
