UMKC School of Medicine, Medical Education Support Services
: Sensitive Exam Patients (SEP models) portray patients for formative learning and evaluation of health care students. In addition to portraying clinical case presentations, SEPs also evaluate students from the "patient" perspective. SEPs are instrumental in assessing physical exam skills of students. They are expected to have excellent memory and communication skills to fulfill those dual responsibilities. SEPs are responsible for providing experiences to students in performing sensitive exam pertinent to Female Breast Exam.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide individual students with instruction in performing the sensitive components of the male and female physical exam.
- Provide feedback to faculty regarding individual learner performance and professionalism as needed.
- Inform program of changes in contact information.
- Work in a professional manner when interacting with learners, supervisors, and faculty.
- Provide coaching and feedback regarding proper techniques as outlined by the program objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess the following skills:
- Basic knowledge of web conferencing (Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams) and common software (Microsoft Word)
- Comfort with sessions being recorded for faculty assessments of learners or for learners to review later
- Comfort with wearing a hospital gown (with undergarments beneath) during SP events
- Professionalism when interacting with learners, faculty/staff and SP peers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Accurate memory to evaluate learners after each scenario
- Accurate memory for case details in order to portray the role of a patient
- Comfort with allowing learners to conduct general physical exams repeatedly
- Dependability and punctuality with event assignments and email responsiveness
Applicants must have the potential (and willingness) to develop the following skills with training and will be provided training and feedback by our program upon hire:
- Flexibility with assisting as facilitators and proctors during large-scale SP events
- Ability to deliver constructive, written and verbal feedback to learners
UMKC Standardized Patients may be invited to participate in virtual patient portrayals (for patient cases mimicking tele-health visits or for educational programs desiring a virtual option for learners). As such, applicants should have:
- Access to a computer and keyboard, and intermediate-level ability to use that computer
- Access to a computer-based webcam, speaker and microphone
- Access to consistent internet connectivity
- Access to a private, secure and distraction-free area in which to conduct assessments
