Temporary Architectural Historian Jobs

Knowledge of the National Register and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Master of Arts (History, Historical Preservation, Anthropology and/or Archaeology) plus two (2) or more years work experience (may include intern/practicum).

Issuing determinations of an undertaking’s effect to a property's National Register qualities

Working with property owners to modify an undertaking to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse impacts to significant cultural resources.

Experience writing and producing technical reports; strong writing and research skills

Ten or more years professional experience preferred

Experience managing and mentoring junior-level staff

Experience managing project budgets and scoping historic architectural projects

Working knowledge of mapping and ARCGIS-related programs

Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or hot and dry climates, including walking, hiking, and field navigating

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Five (5) years of professional historical research experience (includes educational experience)

Knowledge of professional writing styles based on professional experience

Strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by publication and conference presentation record

Knowledge of relevant primary and secondary source material

Possess strong attention to detail and excellent recordkeeping skills

Previous experience with the regulatory framework surrounding cultural resource management (i.e., Section 106, Section 4(f), and NEPA)

Minimum 7 years of applicable experience

Self-motivated, with excellent writing and communication skills

Willingness to travel and work under varied weather conditions, remotely, and within natural environments

Strong oral communication skills; basic computer skills (Microsoft Office products)

Previous work experience in Section 106 NHPA compliance

Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional 36 CFR Part 61 Qualifications in History and/or Architectural History

Experience researching and writing historic contexts

Excellent writing and communication skills

Experience working in the Midwest is preferred

Assessing the National Register of Historic Places eligibility of individual resources and/or districts

Writing architectural descriptions, property histories, historic context statements, statements of significance, and effect determinations

Other approved education or experience may be considered as a substitute for the required education or experience

Knowledge of architectural design, construction detailing, construction procedures, and building materials and systems with an emphasis on historic projects.

Possess technical ability to skillfully review and interpret architectural styles, types, drawings, terms, construction systems and materials.

Review architectural designs and project proposals to provide information on appropriate treatments and technical assistance in accordance with the SOI Standards.

Advise property owners and project contacts how to provide sufficient documentation to ensure proposals or applications are compatible with federal standards.

Evaluate the significance of cultural resources and their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.

Provide project document quality control; reviewing for sufficiency, technical accuracy and compliance with ITD procedures and federal regulatory requirements.

Manage consultant agreements and contracts as needed.

Experience leading Section 106 consultation for or on behalf of a federal agency.

Demonstrated architectural field survey experience such as but not limited to large-scale surveys of corridors or multiple properties.

Knowledge and/or expertise in the application and analysis of Section 4(f) resources and the use of those resources.

Historical knowledge of human rights violations in Eastern Europe

Unofficial Transcripts (if qualifying based on education).

Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of Texas and/or Oklahoma

Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries and archives.

Assist with the preparation of historic property inventory forms (including statements of significance and architectural descriptions)

Assist with preparing environmental documentation, including technical reports.

Masters in Historic Preservation, History, or Architectural History or closely related field.

Must have valid driver’s license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records check.

5 years of professional historical research experience (includes educational experience)

Strong written and oral communication skills evidenced by publication and conference presentation record

Knowledge of relevant primary and secondary source material

Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Performs complex historical research into casualty resolution and unidentified remains interred in U.S. cemeteries

Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for historians, published in 36 CRF 61.

Knowledge of Minnesota history and geography.

Knowledge of state and federal historic preservation law and regulation.

Experience conducting project reviews under state and/or federal historic preservation law and regulation.

Computer skills necessary to develop quality project and program documentation.

Bachelor’s degree in history or a closely related field.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, ability to digitize and maintain electronic records and databases, and GIS experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of architectural styles and types.

Strong writing, editing, and research skills relative to National Register nominations, eligibility assessments, and survey.

Strong communication skills and the ability to successfully collaborate with others.

Monitor preservation grants for architectural surveys and National Register nominations

Participate and assist in the set-up of Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation meetings.

Demonstrated experience in conducting research in major archives on 2-4 significant projects

Experience with oral history strongly preferred

Conduct original research using primary and secondary resources

Write scholarly materials including presentations, monographs, journal articles, and materials to support physical and virtual exhibitions

Create indexes, bibliographies, and similar products for museum publications

Review museum materials for accuracy including checking footnotes for both accuracy and correct format

Solid office skills and knowledge of Google-based platforms and Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is required.

Manage edits and dissemination of the study report template.

Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards is required.

The candidate should be able to work in a team environment and manage tasks as delegated by project lead.

The candidate must possess strong communication skills including phone, writing and presentation skills.

Update study reports for proposed and/or existing Landmarks and Historic Districts as required.
