Job Description

The Youth Programs Coordinator is responsible for a suite of service-based programs for high school and middle school aged youth. They are responsible for managing the youth volunteer program including overall program development and evaluation, and strategic long-term planning that responds to the needs of youth and the Aquarium’s mission. The Youth Programs Coordinator is responsible for the summer youth program, school-year/winter projects, High School job shadow program and the partnership with the Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force Water Quality Lab.

General Accountabilities & Essential Functions:


  1. Under the direction of the director and manager plan, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate service-based youth programming including the Summer Interpretation volunteer program, Winter Projects and other youth volunteer opportunities.
  2. Manages school-year participation/winter projects, and any corresponding partnerships, such as citizen science opportunities or other projects which align with OCAq mission. Works in collaboration with other staff to implement/coordinate special projects such as the, CELC project, and Latinx class. Acts as primary contact/coach/mentor for youth in these programs.
  3. Working within volunteer office policies and procedures, oversee the volunteer cycle for youth volunteers, including recruitment, orientation, interviewing, selection/placement, training, scheduling, supervision, evaluation and recognition. Examine and improve volunteer cycle processes to ensure programs are equitable and accessible to youth participants.
  4. Research and understand trends in youth volunteering, environmental justice, service learning and volunteer management and apply them to Aquarium programs and as appropriate to meet Oregon state standards.
  5. Implement and lead educational opportunities for youth volunteers. Regularly lead training, continuing education and field trip opportunities.
  6. Evaluate youth engagement programming and develop reports to internal and external stakeholders. Improve existing programming and make recommendation for new programs based upon evaluation.
  7. Be an encouraging, supportive and motivating role model for youth as they serve in mutually beneficial volunteer roles in support of the Aquarium’s mission.
  8. Evaluates youth volunteer interpreters for informational accuracy and interpretive techniques. Provides constructive feedback.
  9. Schedules youth volunteer shifts and coordinates youth volunteers to work with other departments as requested or available (ex. plankton station). Works with all other Aquarium departments as needed to coordinate programs and special events
  10. Manages the Youth Job Shadow Program; working with appropriate staff, such as husbandry, to ensure success of the program; responds to requests and schedules accordingly.
  11. Respond to youth inquiries on marine science, careers and conservation.Researches and develops contact sources for programs (schools, youth organizations, etc.). Establishes and manages partnerships with other marine and informal education organizations that support and benefit the youth programs.
  12. Maintains partnership with the Surfrider Foundation Newport Chapter for the Blue Water Task Force Water Quality Lab; managing supply inventory, organization, schedules sample processing and reading.
  13. External partnerships: Collaborate with outside organizations to diversify service learning opportunities for youth. Provide outreach to area high schools’ organizations, including attending service fairs and recruitment events and providing Aquarium career presentations. Serve as the Aquarium representative on regional service or youth-focused projects.
