ABOUT US

Focusing Philanthropy uses an investment model to identify, evaluate, and promote giving opportunities that improve the life-trajectory of people living with great unmet needs here and around the world. Through a rigorous diligence and monitoring process, we select and partner with nonprofits that consistently deliver demonstrable improvements in the health, education, and economic circumstances of the beneficiaries. We work closely with each partner to curate specific opportunities, then raise funds from donors to implement them. These services are provided free to both donors and nonprofit partners in an effort to scale interventions that work. More than $100 million has been contributed to date.

THE POSITION

We are seeking to fill a full-time communications position on a small eight-person team, with the potential to wear other hats in areas such as fundraising, grantmaking, nonprofit partner relationships, program diligence/monitoring, and special initiative support (e.g., annual holiday giving appeals in collaboration with the New York Times) depending on skillset and areas of interest.

Communications responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a master strategic communications calendar, including the population and scheduling of social media and email blast calendars.
  • Participate in meetings, work collaboratively with the team, and perform independent research to create the materials described above.
  • Write clearly and concisely in our established tone of voice.
  • Update content on our WordPress website.
  • Help develop and coordinate an innovative, effective, and personalized program of communications and experiences for our donors.
  • Brainstorm and execute new donor communications touchpoints.
  • Help build a brand toolkit to capture our existing style, identify brand statements and taglines, and ensure consistency across communications.
  • Create such materials for 1) potential donors on Focusing Philanthropy’s purpose and value proposition, 2) donors and prospects to expose them to our nonprofit partners and associated curated giving opportunities, and 3) incumbent donors on the impact of their contributions.
  • Produce compelling print and digital materials based on an existing media collection and generate new media during encounters with our nonprofit partners. Materials include fundraising campaign one-pagers and comprehensive proposals, campaign reports, header images, impact reports, diligence trip reports, human interest stories, brochures, annual reports, PowerPoint presentations, letters, emails, videos, icons, charts, infographics, talking points, and social media posts.
  • Apply audience insights and analytics to continually improve and evolve messaging and tactics.
  • Edit and proofread materials submitted by team members and nonprofit partners for public distribution.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong analytical skills for reviewing complex information (impact models, budgets, academic research, campaign reports, donor giving history, strategic plans, etc.) and distilling/synthesizing it into accessible insights and persuasive copy.
  • Understanding of nonprofit marketing challenges with an eagerness to drive innovative donor communications solutions.
  • Working familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Passion for social causes with preferred professional or volunteer experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Knowledge of principles of graphic design (typography, color, visual hierarchy, grid systems, imagery, iconography, etc.).
  • Minimum 4-year degree (Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field preferred).
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator; Premiere Pro or other video editing software a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize workflow from concept to execution with minimal supervision, including managing multiple tasks, setting schedules, and meeting deadlines.
  • Basic knowledge of WordPress or other web content management software, MailChimp or similar email marketing platform, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • The ideal candidate will have at least five years of prior writing, editing, and content creation experience.
