Job Description
About The Nest

The nest is a place where every role has meaning, every team member is respected, and every day is a chance to fly higher. When you join bluebird bio, you're not just landing a new gig, you become part of a flock that's pursuing curative gene therapies to give patients and their families more bluebird days. We are doers, thinkers and collaborators who embrace and live by our values:

  • Celebrate (sm)all wins
  • Keep it real
  • Be Compassionate
  • Stay humble and curious
  • Persist for Purpose

Our innovation is rooted in the diversity of our teams and results are achieved through cooperation and the integration of multiple viewpoints. This is personal and we approach every challenge with radical care.

About The Flock

As the Vice President, Head of the US Field Medical team, you will serve as a senior leader of leaders to inspire, lead, paint a vision for what great scientific interactions and partnerships look like and execute on this vision. Gene Therapy MSLs (GT-MSLs) and Medical Value Liaisons (MVLs) at bluebird are highly trained, experienced medical and payor experts, and you as their lead will ensure that this team will ready the internal organization and external scientific, medical and payor communities for bluebird’s upcoming, transformative gene therapy launches for cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD), transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT) and sickle cell disease (SCD). If you are passionate about bringing pioneering therapies to patients with rare diseases, living/breathing the MSL ‘ethos’ while also enjoying connecting the ‘field’ with ‘corporate’, then check out this role and its ability to make an impact throughout the organization and the severe genetic disease medical community!

How You’ll Fly

In this leader of leaders role, you'll help to bring more patients their bluebird days by:

  • Establishing key knowledge objectives with measurable application for Regional Leaders of MSL and MVL teams to meet and maintain in order to ensure they are able to successfully engage internal and external stakeholders on the Gene Therapy Platform and the Disease State of 3 Severe Genetic Diseases (CALD, TDT, SCD)
  • Advocating for and speaking on behalf of the Field Medical team at key internal, crossfunctional leadership meetings while also partnering closely with internal birds such as Medical Directors, Marketing, Commercial/Government Affairs/Payor leadership, etc.
  • Expand significantly the existing field medical team by developing and executing a strategy that drives attracting, hiring and training field medical talent to include GTMSLs and Payor-focused MVLs
  • Leading, coaching, developing and ultimately empowering your Field Leadership to manage their own teams
  • Translating insights obtained from the external medical community into meaningful adjustments to medical strategy and tactics in order to help maximize HCPs’ understanding of our potentially transformative gene therapies
  • Translating bluebird’s corporate and medical strategic priorities into clear goals, objectives and initiatives (with quantitative and qualitative MSL metrics and KPIs) to demonstrate a clear translation of overall goals into executable field medical deliverables and engagements
  • Leading strategic development and enhancement of CRM system with IT in order to drive collection, organization, prioritization, categorization and communication of insights from Field Medical to the rest of the organization

What You’ll Bring

You’re the bird we’re looking for if you have:

  • Led or executed Payor engagements (commercial, Medicaid/Medicare plans) in the US and/or significant experience with P&T (Pharmacy and therapeutics) committees (strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and effectively drive execution of multiple deliverables in a fast-paced environment
  • An ability to effectively communicate scientific and medical information to both internal and external medical stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to systematically develop, organize and track KPIs/metrics as well as insights for the field medical team
  • Experience working in the hematopoietic stem cell transplant field, rare genetic diseases and/or in a new US medical product launch (strongly preferred)
  • An advanced degree (PharmD, MD, DO, PhD ) with at least 8-10 years experience in Medical Affairs (required, with some time spent ‘in house’) and managed MSLs for a minimum of 5 years (Required)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience, including the ability to work crossfunctionally, build consensus, coach and develop staff, build morale, directly and through influence.

Compensation & Benefits

We offer a total compensation and rewards package that ranks among the best in our industry. Base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The anticipated annualized salary range for this role is $300,000.00 - $430,000.00. Your base pay will be determined based on several factors including market data, demonstrated skills, relevant education or training, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and travel requirements. Our overall package also includes eligibility for stock, incentive bonuses, and benefit programs, a flexible time off program, as well as 28 paid holidays, including 2 company shutdowns.
