The City of Elk Grove Animal Services is looking for dedicated and collaborative individuals to join our team of talented and valued employees. Veterinary Assistants serve as integral members of the veterinary team and help to maintain the standards of care for our shelter animals. This position is part-time, temporary, at-will, and does not qualify for benefits beyond those required by law.
The Elk Grove Animal Service's mission is to promote responsible pet ownership, the reduction of animal overpopulation, the safety of our citizens and animals, and to prevent the spread or infection of rabies. We strive for the humane treatment of animals through education, intervention, and investigation, as well as the enforcement of state laws and City ordinances. We are committed to providing courteous and quality service to the residents of Elk Grove and responding to the changing needs of our community.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs routine animal care, treatment, maintenance and cleaning activities associated with the City's Animal Shelter; maintains and updates medical records; and performs related duties as assigned.
- Answers inquiries from the public, both over the counter and by telephone, on laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to animal control and the animal shelter.
- Assists a veterinarian in performing surgeries and providing medications to kennel animals; assists in animal health care during the recovery/treatment process.
- Assists with the collection of samples and specimens and the performance of laboratory testing.
- Sanitizes and performs routine cleaning and general maintenance of medical equipment, facilities and caging; and unloading, storing, and restocking medical supplies and related equipment.
- Assists with the euthanasia of animals, in accordance with established laws and departmental policy; disposes of euthanized animals in accordance with established departmental procedure.
- Monitors all animals for signs of illness or unusual behavior; makes notations and reports problems regarding health and behavior of animals.
- Assists with the cleaning of cages and kennels; exercises animals; replaces bedding, toys, and litter pans; maintains a clean and safe environment at all times.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Maintains documentation related to animal's health and suitability for adoption.
- Assists with the preparation of operating and examination rooms.
- Humanely kennels all animals and identifies shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling, including animals which may be ill, injured, quarantined, aggressive, or difficult to control.
- Handles, lifts, carries, and moves animals, restraining as appropriate; handles frightened, fractious, and injured animals; conducts routine health evaluations of animals; administers injections of medication, vaccinations, tranquilizers, or other drugs under direction.
- Provides food and water for each animal under care; observes food consumption to ensure animals' overall health; administers medication as directed.
- Maintains accurate and legible patient charts and documents daily care.
- Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
- Basic symptoms of common animal diseases.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Practices, methods, and materials used in cleaning animal facilities.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Safe and humane animal handling principles and practices.
- Methods for caring for and feeding domestic animals.
- Physical and behavioral characteristics of various animal species.
- Methods and techniques used in customer service and public relations.
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
- Learn euthanasia techniques.
- Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
- Learn procedures used to administer pharmaceuticals.
- Effectively represent the City to outside individuals and agencies to accomplish the goals and objectives of the unit.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Work cooperatively with other departments, City officials, and outside agencies.
- Work safely with aggressive animals and hazardous chemicals.
- Operate the equipment used in handling various types of animals.
- Learn to recognize disease symptoms of domestic animals.
- Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
- Respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately to inquiries from the public, City staff, or other agencies on sensitive issues in area of responsibility.
- Independently handle and care for animals housed in the City's Animal Shelter.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
Six months of experience involving the care and treatment of animals.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and in a field environment; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to walk on uneven terrain, loose soil, and sloped surfaces; to lift, carry, push, restrain, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations; to operate equipment and vehicle; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
