What We're Looking For
This position can be located at a variety of HNTB office locations – including, but not limited to, Chicago, Boston, Austin, Denver, Kansas City – and is open to any candidates living near cities where HNTB has an office location. This candidate will be working within the HNTB’s Technology Solutions Center on the Community and Engagement Solutions Team. Comprised of geospatial and web application developers, planners and public engagement experts, this team develops and delivers some of the most innovative and immersive web applications in the transportation industry. This team works hand-in-hand with other HNTB digital champions to support innovative creative media and community engagement solutions for internal and external clients and audiences.
This candidate will be working collaboratively with the team to design, develop, configure, test, implement, and maintain web-based solutions and applications. The candidate will use human-centered design principles to inform and create user experiences within current and future solutions. These experiences should be user-friendly, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing while meeting the needs of the users. Being able to work on and prioritize multiple projects at one time, as well as have experience in consulting or a similar collaborative work environment, is a must for this position.
This opportunity includes:
- Based on research, be able to create user personas to represent target user groups and their needs for a digital solution.
- Conduct usability testing on digital solutions to provide the development team with insight in areas for improvement.
- Design user-friendly interfaces, keeping in mind the overall user experience and journey – and visual elements for both desktop and mobile digital solutions.
- A willingness to learn new skills, tools, and platforms and to think outside of the box to deliver unique digital solutions.
- Provide graphic design services to the team and our projects. This could include designing infographics, eBlast templates, icons, social media graphics, fact sheets, presentations, reports, website graphics, etc.
- Provide creative input and support for public outreach and engagement solutions such as virtual meeting websites, project websites, visualizations, and videos.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Design wireframes and/or prototypes to demonstrate visual elements of a digital solution and inform the development teams into its development.
- Conducting user research and gathering insights about users’ behaviors, preferences, and pain points with existing and future digital solutions.
- Ability to listen to the needs and requests of the team, clients, and project groups to enhance or build new applications to address those needs.
- Creatively translating information by assessing problems and conveying visual solutions, with support from more experienced staff.
- Using InDesign and other graphic design software (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator) proficiently.
- Converting substantial amounts of data or information into visual illustrations proficiently, with support from senior staff.
- Able to demonstrate a history of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
What You'll Do:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Brainstorms new ideas and creates concepts for visually communicating key messages.
- Creates print and digital materials for PR and internal communications, including brochures, ads, and announcements.
- May review and approve final graphics.
- Creates print and digital materials for presentations, including PowerPoints, leave-behinds, and display boards.
- Maintains and organizes digital assets such as icons, photography, and stock graphics.
- Coordinates with print vendors and photographers.
- Creates print and digital materials for proposals, including templates, charts, maps, infographics, covers and layout.
What You'll Need:
- In lieu of education 5 years of relevant experience
- Associates Degree in Art, Graphic Design or related field and 3 years of relevant experience, or
What You'll Bring:
- Collaborative – work with developers and digital innovation team members across multiple sections and departments to develop solutions for project teams and clients.
- Positivity – approach a challenge and task with a can-do and enthusiastic attitude, seeking innovative and creative ways to complete tasks and deliver what the client needs.
- Listens Well – strives to understand others through open dialogue and is open to others’ input and suggestions.
- Technical Excellence – a strong UI/UX portfolio with design and project examples that showcase your understanding of human-centered design of digital applications, platforms, and/or dashboards.
What We Prefer:
- Comfort in using user research tools such as UserTesting.com, Hotjar, Google Analytics, or other similar survey/research tools.
- Knowledge of best practices in web design and development is a plus.
- Consultant experience is a plus.
- Understand, design for, and provide feedback on a solution’s 508 and ADA compliance, as well as other accessibility and Title VI considerations.
- Experience in web-first approach to developing digital solutions.
- Experience designing prototypes and/or wireframes.
- Strong communications skills and collaborative approach to work.
- Experience creating responsive designs targeting a wide range of devices and formats.
- Bachelor's Degree in Art, Graphic Design or related field.
- Proficient in design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD, After Effects, etc. or similar applications.
- Knowledge of coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and design frameworks such Material Design or Bootstrap is a plus.

The approximate pay range for Colorado is $64,434.26 - $96,651.40. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
