Job Description


Under general supervision, responsible for operations of security, treatment, and support services in a housing unit of the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility, as well as for the work performed by Correctional Officers, treatment staff, and others during their shift.


Direct subordinate officers and treatment staff in the assignment of specific shift duties for each staff member on that respective shift. Assign staff to: security duties such as count, searches, cell assignments, incarcerated individual work detail, shakedowns, meal supervision, treatment programs, breathalysers, urinalysis, etc. Follow up on the performance of these assignments according to institutional policy. Complete subordinates' performance evaluations. Develop and review work schedules. Coordinate on-unit work and treatment schedules with institution's master schedule. Ensure that all staff, programs, and services comply with AA/EEO responsibilities.


Train and review performance of all staff assigned to unit in security procedures, applicable support procedures, operation of security controls, incarcerated individual movement, meal procedures, laundry procedures, incarcerated individual schedules, delivery and expectations of treatment programs, unit cleaning procedures, etc.


Conduct daily inspection of the unit. Review digital log for the unit, ICON count, disciplinary reports, cell restrictions, and all other records for which the correctional officers and treatment staff are responsible during each shift. Direct all subordinates to rectify and discrepancy. Accompany or visit work areas of subordinates, observe duty performance, direct or suggest changes, record assignments, and communicate these verbally or in memo, personal action, or evaluation form. Ensure that programs and services are relevant of incarcerated individual population.


Participate in incarcerated individual classification meetings. Report information, discuss incarcerated individual behavior, policies and procedures. Discuss decisions with the classification and supervisory personnel and other staff. Review class II incarcerated individual disciplinary reports. Serve as appeal source for class II appeals and for informal resolutions for incarcerated individual grievances pertaining to issues in the living unit.


Regularly communicate with department heads, Correctional Supervisor II's, and Deputy Warden to ensure consistency of operations. Coordinate security procedures, treatment program services, and support functions with other units and with relevant departments.


Complete regular reports as required. Attend meetings for in-service training, departmental and institution meetings, and institutionally approved meetings away from the facility


Minimum Qualification Requirements


Graduation from an accredited college or university and experience equal to three years' full-time professional-level work in a treatment or habilitation program for correctional inmates, the delinquent, disadvantage, mentally or emotionally ill, or intellectually disabled;


OR


an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting thirty semester hours of graduate level course work in the social/behavioral sciences, health sciences, or administrative sciences (e.g., business administration) for each one year of the required experience up to a maximum substitution of two years shall be considered as qualified;


OR


employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of three years' full-time experience as a Correctional Supervisor 1 or Correctional Supervisor 2, or two years' full-time experience as a Correctional Treatment Manager or Correctional Security Manager shall be considered as qualified.

Additional Qualification Requirements


  • For purposes of qualifying, "professional-level experience" shall be exemplified by responsibility for assessment and diagnosis of client problems and needs, developing a plan of treatment, evaluating client progress toward meeting treatment goals, and modifying treatment objectives. Work at this level generally requires a prerequisite of four or more years of post high school educational training in one of the behavioral, social, or health sciences.
