As a Trail Maintenance Technician, you will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing our recreational facilities. You will conduct regular safety inspections, identify hazards, and perform necessary maintenance and repairs to ensure the trails are in top-notch condition. Your efforts will contribute to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for hikers and bikers of all ages and skill levels.

  • Summary of Duties:** Under general supervision, the Trail Maintenance Technician conducts regularly scheduled safety inspections of hike and bike trails and provides necessary cleaning, maintenance, and repairs.


**Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS**

  • Inspects all department maintained hike and bike trails for structural and surface soundness, cleanliness, and identification of hazards.
  • Maintains daily work reports.
  • Routinely operates a 16-yard tandem dump truck, towing a 24” car hauler trailer carrying a 16k loader and full load of debris.
  • Coordinates as required with other Parks and City staff to effectively organize scheduled work and activities.
  • Identifies and replaces missing and damaged trail signage.
  • Assists construction crews in large trail replacement/installation projects and other related assignments.
  • Determines materials needed for repairs and places orders.
  • Provides emergency assistance to citizens or other City departments as needed.
  • Cleans trails on a regular schedule with tractor type sweeper.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
  • Repairs minor damage/deterioration of trail surfaces and safety railings using appropriate methods of concrete replacement/patching and welding.
  • May assist in the support of the department's asset management program.
  • Makes entries into, and maintains compliance with, departmental service request and work management system.
  • May lead the work activities of others.


Marginal Duties


  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Typical Decisions:** Incumbent determines extent of hazards and related liability and makes appropriate field decisions. Determines appropriate methods/materials used for repairs.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Skill in:** Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned functional operations; entering and compiling field data into accurate and clear computer and written reports; operating trucks requiring a Texas Class B commercial driver's license; operating power and hand tools to perform routine manual labor tasks.
  • Experience:** One (1) year of general experience in construction and repair work, preferably with outdoor, public, recreational facilities.
  • Education:** High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Knowledge of:** Operation and maintenance of construction equipment; routine construction, maintenance, and repair methods as applied to recreation trails and other park facilities; basic safety standards; basic welding and carpentry methods and applications.


Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements


  • Physical Demands and Working Conditions:** Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, medians & rights of way, to operate equipment and motor vehicles on terrain and streets; to operate equipment and motor vehicles around bystanders and dense crowds; strength, stamina and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull and pull materials and objects weighing up to 80 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
  • Licenses and Certifications:** Texas Class “A” required within 12 months of employment.
  • Conditions of Employment:** Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.


Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, dust, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
