The Laser Technology and Applications Group seeks an individual to assist in the operation of the Optical Coating Facility (OCF), which supports the design, development, testing and characterization of optical thin films ranging from X-ray to far infrared. These coatings enable system performance in a wide range of applications, such as directed energy, lidar, sensing and optical communications. Example coatings include conventional dielectric anti-reflection and high-reflectivity mirrors, narrow-band, multi-band and broad-band filters, hot/cold and metallic mirrors and neutral density filters, as well as more complex coatings, such as ultra-narrow-bandpass filters and damage resistant high energy laser mirrors. The OCF employs state-of-the-art deposition technologies and operates a variety of related diagnostic equipment. The successful candidate will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team whose mission is to develop laser technology and optical systems for a wide range MIT Lincoln Laboratory programs.
Responsibilities
- Document and communicate designs and performance results to internal team members and external vendors, partners, and sponsors.
- Test and characterize coatings, including transmission/reflection spectroscopy, visual defect inspections, and durability.
- Operate and maintain thin film deposition systems and ancillary equipment.
- Support modeling, design and development of optical interference coatings.
Requirements
- Understanding of optics, including interference and polarization principles.
- Two or more years of hands-on experience in a related technical field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with thin film spectroscopic characterization and familiarity with physical vapor deposition systems a plus
