Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with relevant technologies and software used in digital archiving and preservation.
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Experience with and understanding of international preservation standards and best practices.
  • 2 years of experience with digital archives, preservation, or life-cycle planning.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an academic or research library.
  • SAA Digital Archives Specialist certificate.
  • Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to digital collections.
  • Experience in digital curation, collection development, and/or managing digital repositories.
  • Familiarity with Python or other computer programming languages.
  • Strong understanding of metadata standards and schemas, with experience in applying them to digital materials.

The Digital Archivist will play a critical role in managing and preserving our digital collections to ensure their long-term accessibility and usability. The Digital Archivist will be responsible for creating and implementing digital preservation plans, engaging in digital curation and collection development, providing guidance on metadata for digital materials, and supporting access to Texas State’s digital collections.

Job Duties
  • Works with content stewards to prepare legacy digital content for preservation and access.
  • Provides training and outreach on digital archiving best practices, metadata standards, and preservation techniques to library staff, faculty, and researchers as needed.
  • Engages in digital curation and collection development, evaluating potential acquisitions, assessing copyright and intellectual property issues, and making recommendations regarding the inclusion or exclusion of digital materials.
  • Identifies collections, records, and items with digital preservation needs and implements effective solutions to ensure their long-term viability.
  • Facilitates access to digital collections in collaboration with other Digitization and Preservation staff.
  • Develops and implements digital preservation plans and strategies, including assessing risks, identifying preservation priorities, and executing preservation actions for both digitized and born-digital materials.
  • Analyzes, researches, and improves digital preservation workflows to ensure long-term care for born digital and digitized materials.
  • Engages with the larger digital preservation community to keep abreast of emerging strategies, share expertise, exchange knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of the field of digital archiving.
  • Consults on metadata for digital materials, applying appropriate schemas, standards, and controlled vocabularies to enhance discoverability and access.
