We are seeking a teen permanency caseworker (social service assistant 1) to join our Child Welfare Program team in Portland.

What you need to qualify:
A bachelor’s degree in human services or a field related to human services.
OR
A bachelor’s degree unrelated to human services, and either:
1) One year of human services-related experience, OR
2) Completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with
Oregon caseworker competency
.
OR
An associate degree and either:
1) Two years of human services-related experience, OR
2) One year of human services-related experience and related training, coursework or certification consistent with
Oregon caseworker competency
.
A valid driver license and acceptable driving record are necessary for this position.

  • The ability to use trauma-informed and anti-racist practices that are sensitive to the child and family’s language, race, and culture and adapt communication style to the intended audience, listen intently, and speak with empathy.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and ability to navigate technology.
  • The ability to serve as a role model for holding difficult conversations, navigating emotionally-charged situations, and seeking support when needed.
  • The demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and meet someone where they are at including experience intentionally listening and to understanding their values, needs, desires, and trauma-responses
  • Knowledge, training, and/or education surrounding addiction, mental health, and/or poverty and how these affect family systems and inform child safety decisions.
  • The ability to communicate effectively - verbally and in writing - as an advocate for others as well as share complex technical and legal information (to people with diverse education, language, and cultural backgrounds).

that will support children and young adults to be safer, healthier, experience less trauma and achieve a greater well-being.
As a teen permanency caseworker, you will be:
  • Working with families to develop safety and treatment plans for children.
  • Maintaining complete and accurate case files, records, and documents.
  • Explaining planned changes to youth and preparing them for transitions, including returns home, guardianships, and adoptions.
  • Attending court hearings, preparing court reports, and making case presentations.
  • Providing information to parents and youth about court hearings, medical visits, mental health visits, etc.
  • Making transportation arrangements for family time/transporting youth.
  • Assessing teens’ developmental progress and treatment needs.
  • Facilitation and observing family time with youth, parents, and other family members.
  • Referring parents and children to service providers.
  • Working closely with parents and schools to assess whether children are meeting academic goals.

  • Monitoring the safety and wellbeing of children and teens through ongoing contact with them and their parents (biological and resource parents).
Working conditions:
  • Typical working hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but evening and weekend work may be required. You will be compensated for working overtime.
  • You may walk into stressful situations that require quick decision-making skills to ensure the safety of those being serviced and own physical safety. This may also be trauma inducing.
  • Employee's work may be conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites.
  • You may interact with a wide range of people including some who have experienced trauma, exhibit challenges in controlling their anger, or other unexpected emotions impacted by drug use, cognitive impairments, or other factors.
  • On-call shifts are required about once per quarter.
