Job Description
What to Expect
Tesla Inc. is seeking a Technical Editor to join our team in Palo Alto, CA. You will be the bridge between global technicians and the larger-scale, global service network. By using in-house tools, partnering with engineers from service, quality, and design, and working collaboratively with diagnostics, training, technical operations, and other teams, you will help keep vehicles driving on the road for hundreds of thousands of electric miles.

Tesla is a fast-paced working environment that celebrates highly motivated individuals. We believe in working fast, learning from our failures, and making it better next time. Our team is full of people with deep technical understanding, excellent communication skills, and time management prowess. If you have a love of learning something new every day and can clearly communicate what you learn to audiences with various levels of technical knowledge, then you will fit right in. The work that you do will create changes in current and future production vehicles and help transition the automotive industry to a revolutionary approach to vehicle service.

What You’ll Do
  • Collaborate with various engineering and quality teams to gather technical information.
  • Improve editorial and visual standards for documentation and recommend innovative designs, layouts, and formatting as needed.
  • Understand technical problems and communicate them effectively to non-technical people.
  • Manage tasks and information flow using collaboration software (such as JIRA, SharePoint, and custom databases).
  • Validate information for accuracy and use a routing and review process for document approval.
  • Partner with engineering teams to create and update diagnostic information and procedures contained in the diagnostics database for use by non-engineers.
  • Edit content according to a style guide and enforce organization standards.
What You’ll Bring
  • Strong capacity for both logical and creative thinking.
  • Bachelors in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Technical / Professional Writing, Journalism, Communications, or relevant working experience.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task and evaluate priorities.
  • 1-3 years working experience in related field.
  • Ability to edit and create documentation that is accurate, complete, clear, specific, and as concise as possible.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Elevated level of interpersonal communication skills.
  • Can extract and comprehend system operation from typical engineering documentation from both a software and mechanical perspective (e.g., schematics and subsystem specification documents).
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to peers, people from various parts of the organization, non-technical people, and third-party consumers.
  • Experience with HTML, XML, DITA, Markdown, Git, SQL, and/or Python is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, attention-to-detail, troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Previous work experience with vehicle diagnostics, specific vehicle maintenance, and troubleshooting manuals is a plus.
