About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Writer / Editor II to support the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This task provides expert technical writing skills to internal and external groups concerning health communication and marketing programs, projects, and strategies. This role supports the health communication and information dissemination efforts for assigned programs and reviews, edits, and clears communication and marketing materials and presentations.
Responsibilities
- Offer technical writing assistance with marketing and promotion.
- Provide expertise in technical writing.
- Write technical and scientific content for programs that are grammatically correct, adhere to best practices in technical and scientific writing, and comply with CDC plain language requirements.
- Assist with internal and external partnership activities.
- Edit complex scientific reports to ensure appropriate medical terminology and definitions.
- Proofread brochures, reports, and other documents related to the programs to ensure the documents are grammatically correct, adhere to best practices in technical writing, and comply with CDC plain language requirements.
- Edit scripts, brochures, reports, and other program-related documents for grammatical correctness, adherence to technical writing best practices, and compliance with CDC plain language requirements.
- Provide health communication, education, writing/editing support.
- Write and edit high-visibility, high-priority projects and materials for research findings.
- Provide technical writing, technical editing, and proofreading support for web content.
- Format, style, and tag report components using software using eXtyles or similar programs to create end-use documents for layout (PDF) and online (XML) versions.
Required Experience and Skills
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to additional requests.
- Experience working with SharePoint and Word.
- Must have direct experience in health communications.
- Plain Language Writing experience is preferred.
- Preferred experience working with CDC programs, policies, procedures, and communication activities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a team of health communication and graphic design specialists to deliver time-sensitive customer products.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication.
- Must be proficient in formatting, styling, and tagging report components using eXtyles or similar software to create end-user documents for layout (PDF) and online (XML) versions.
- Expertise in technical writing, editing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to obtain a government clearance.
- Proficiency in eXtyles is highly desired.
Education and Training
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing, communications, advertising, English, or related field with 5 years experience writing and editing both electronic and print publications.
- Or, Master's degree in journalism, marketing, communications, advertising, English, or a related field with 2 years of experience supporting communication and marketing strategies.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift 25 pounds on occasion.
