Position Description
Reporting to the Publications Director of the Asia Center’s Publications Program, the Japan & Korea Editor will manage editing, design, typesetting, and production from the manuscript stage through bound books. Responsible for all aspects of the publication of 3-4 books a year and serves as the principal contact with the authors of these books throughout the production process. Writes catalog and other advertising copy for these books. Copyedits approximately 1-2 titles a year for organization, substance, accuracy, and style. Responsible for maintaining a pool of free-lance editors, proofreaders, graphic artists, and indexers adequate to the press's needs. Working with the director, coordinates the peer review process for Japan and Korea-related manuscripts. Assists the director with tasks related to the publication of new books, paperbacks, translations, and reprints. Handles relations with printers and other vendors and with Harvard University Press, and other related tasks as necessary
Basic Qualifications
Graduate degree in Asian Studies or related field. Working knowledge of Chinese/Japanese/ Korean, spoken and written. 5+ years related experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Excellent editing and proofreading skills, familiarity with basic editorial principles and scholarly conventions, and general knowledge of publishing procedures such as basic design, typesetting, stages of proofs, and printing. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks based on changing schedules and needs, and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, experience managing freelancers, and working with authors. Knowledge of Asian-language fonts and electronic editing in Microsoft Word. Facility with Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop, or comparable software.
