Position Description

UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Course / Program Description

A key component of the teacher induction program is its job-embedded system of mentoring support and professional learning. The UCLA Extension mentor that is assigned to each participating teacher is responsible for coordinating with the teacher, school site administrators, and program instructors to support the teacher's planning and implementation of an individual learning plan and to provide coaching and ongoing support for improving instructional practices. Participating teachers receive an average of at least one hour per week of individualized support throughout each academic year during which they are enrolled in the induction program, and they maintain documentation of all support activities. Participating teachers who have been assigned a UCLA Extension mentor must be enrolled concurrently in this course while completing the other induction program coursework.

The hiring department is hiring mentors for all subject areas (Multiple Subject, Education Specialist, Art, Social Science, English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Biological Science, etc).

Mentors receive one UCLA Extension continuing education unit per year.

Mentors are assigned to a candidate at the beginning of the PK-12 school semester and within 30 days of program enrollment. The Mentor will work with the same candidate for the full two academic years of program enrollment. Mentors provide an average of not less than one hour per week of individualized support and mentoring to their candidate.

Mentors provide no less than one hour per week of individualized support and mentoring for their assigned candidates.

In Induction A, B, and C, teacher candidates develop their own inquiry question to examine an aspect of their teaching practice that they want to improve, related to their ILP and to the course’s essential question. Working closely with their mentor, they use a plan-tech-reflect-apply approach to implement an action plan for that inquiry question. In the Induction (D), candidates demonstrate their development as a professional educator by designing and delivering a learning module to share professional knowledge on a selected topic with others in that candidate’s professional learning community.

Instructor Duties

New and veteran mentors participate in the Mentor Collaboration course each term. Content is differentiated to meet each mentor’s coaching needs.

  • “Just-in-time” support for day-to-day questions and issues of instructional practice
  • Maintaining communication with site administrator and any other identified school support personnel about the availability of school resources or school initiatives that could support specific ILP goals, and/or the development of candidate individualized pathway to learning Larger School Community (LSC) Connections modules.
  • Coordination with the candidate on implementing an action plan for achieving ILP goals and identifying material resources, people resources, and professional communities that will support the action plan
  • Consultation with the candidate and the site administrator on the initial development of the ILP
  • Monitoring and evaluation of candidate’s ILP progress
  • Participation in an evaluation of mentoring practices, for which mentors will video-record one or more of their interactive sessions with the candidate and receive formative feedback
  • Facilitation of candidate growth through modeling, guided reflection on practice, and feedback on classroom instruction, as well as guidance to promote enduring professional skills over the long-term
